Sims joins Broncos for 3 seasons

The Ergon Energy Broncos have secured young forward Ashton Sims for the next three years.

Sims, 22, will make the move from St George Illawarra to the Broncos for the 2008 season after signing with the club today.

Broncos' chief executive Bruno Cullen said the club viewed Sims as a valuable acquisition in the immediate future of the Brisbane club.

"In discussions with both he and his manager, we were very impressed with the attitude and desire he has shown to success in the game," said Cullen.

"He presents as a very level-headed and mature individual."

Cullen said Sims outstanding experience for someone of his age ? he made his NRL debut in 2003 at age 18 - had been the telling factor in making the decision to bid for his services.

"Having played nearly 80 games at the age of 22, Ashton has certainly done his apprenticeship," he said.

"We think he is on the verge of making a big contribution to the Brisbane Broncos club."

Sims said Broncos' head coach Wayne Bennett had made a big impact on the youngster.

After five years with the Dragons he is looking for a new challenge to further improve his rugby league skills.

This is the thinking behind signing with the Broncos, he said.

"There are two main reasons why I chose the Broncos," Sims said.

"Firstly the attraction of playing under Wayne Bennett appeals to me.

"I spoke to Wayne about things earlier this week and he really impressed me with his thoughts and knowledge of the game.

"Secondly, I am moving from Sydney because I believe a fresh start in a different state can only provide me with challenges which will hopefully bring out the best in me.

"I plan on re-assessing my goals and I really want to improve myself as a player.

"I have no doubt that Brisbane is the right environment for me to do that."

While pleased with the signing of Sims, Cullen said the deal did not close the door on the future of international Petero Civoniceva.

"We are still in discussions with Petero about his future with the club," said Cullen.
