Greats of the game support CQ NRL Bid
Mon February 27, 2012
Source: www.cqnrlbid.com.au

Last Friday night some of the greatest players to ever play the great game of rugby league came together to show their support for the CQ NRL Bid. The CQ Leagues Club played host to the 2012 CQ NRL Bid Season Launch which over 200 people attended. A special part of the night included the presentation of the 11 QR National Scholarship Recipients and their mentors.

Gary Larson, Jason Hetherington, Alan McIndoe, Steve Bell, Matt Sing, PJ Marsh, Justin Loomans, Kevin Campion and Mark Hohn were part of a star-studded line up all in attendance on the night.

Larson, Hetherington, McIndoe, Bell, Sing, Marsh and Loomans will provide mentoring and guidance to the young Scholarship Recipients along with Rhys Wesser, Mark Graham, Nick Kenny and Sid Domic who were unable to make it on the night. Meanwhile Kevin Campion and Mark Hohn were present on the night representing their cleaning services business TJS Cleaning Services which is one of 150 Corporate Partners of the CQ NRL Bid.

CEO Denis Keeffe was delighted with the show of support on the night. "To have so many great NRL players present to our biggest function of the year is a ringing endorsement of the work we are doing for the CQ NRL Bid. We did some quick sums in the lead-up to the night and the 9 former greats we had attend on Friday night collectively have played over 1700 NRL & Super League Games, 88 State of Origins and 32 International games. I think the important thing to note is that all bar one of these players is born and bred in Central Queensland. CQ is a production line for great rugby league players and the NRL knows this."

Guest Speaker for the Season Launch was Gold Coast Titans Chairman Paul Broughton who gave the football-savvy attendees a real insight into the machinations of the NRL and the challenges of securing an NRL license. Gold Coast Titans were the latest NRL Team to be granted a license in 2007.

The CQ NRL Bid continues to go from strength-to-strength and is providing some real outcomes for the region through a myriad of community programs aimed at engaging and developing the grassroots of the game. The QR National Scholarship Program is just one of those programs that provides three-way support to young aspiring athletes in the region to chase their dreams in rugby league. Financial Support with schooling and sporting costs, Player Welfare Education and Mentoring from a former NRL great are all key elements of a program that shows the CQ NRL Bid's commitment to Grassroots Development.

Injury-hit Comets Back In Form As Sing Makes Comeback
Tue June 30, 2009
by Queensland Rugby League

THE Central Comets' casualty ward was full last night after a bruising 28-24 win over the Redcliffe Dolphins at Browne Park.

In front of a massive home crowd, the Comets finished with just one player on the bench after front-rowers George Tuakura (knee) and Aaron Summers (ankle) and five-eighth Ian Webster (neck) suffered serious injuries during the round 15 clash.

After three straight losses, the four-point win kept the Comets at the top of the Queensland Cup table alongside Souths Logan, who thrashed Easts 50-16 on Saturday.

The two competition frontrunners enjoy a four-point buffer at the top after the Northern Pride's 30-18 loss to the Sunshine Coast.

Comets coach Wayne Barnett last night described his team's win as "gutsy".

Leading 18-0 at half-time, the Comets lost Tuakura five minutes after the break before Dolphins interchange forward Paul Ivan barged over out wide.

Comets lock Mick Esdale found himself in the sin-bin in the 52nd minute after an all-in-brawl.

From the ensuing penalty Redcliffe winger Mitch Rivett scored and Liam Georgetown nailed his second sideline conversion to reduce the deficit to 18-12.

But against the run of play, Comets captain Nat Bowman found a flying Dallas Williams with a cross-field kick, with the winger finding his namesake Jade Williams back inside to score his second try.

Dallas Williams then produced the highlight of the game when he defused a bomb on his own 10-metre line before racing 60 metres and off-loading to Jade Williams, who was tackled metres short from the tryline.

On the next tackle, former Queensland and Australian winger Matt Sing, in his comeback game, sent Dallas Williams over for the match-winner.

The Dolphins, who were bolstered by the return of Broncos forward Palmer Wapau, struck back with a dubious try, which looked a double movement, to five-eighth Tim Yee.

With 40 seconds to go, Redcliffe winger Alwyn Simpson scored a late consolation try but the big home crowd were already on their feet applauding their team's heroics.

Bowman broke Heath Egglestone's point-scoring record for the club with his four goals and a spectacular first half try.

Barnett praised his team's defence and bravery up front with 82kg utility Cooper Nobbs forced to spend time in the front-row.

Former Penrith, Roosters and Cowboys star Sing wound back the clock with a vintage game at fullback for the Comets - much to the delight of his big fan club.

"I was very impressed with Matty," Barnett said.

"I said to him in the sheds how'd you go and he said 'I loved it'."

The Comets' next match is against the Ipswich Jets at Browne Park on July 11, with the City versus Country representative game this weekend.

Summers will race the clock to be fit to join team-mates Tom Hewitt, Alan Rothery and Karl Johnson in the Country side.
