Source: www.parraeels.com.auPirtek Parramatta Eels 'metre-eater' Fuifui Moimoi has tonight edged out Luke Burt and seven-time winner Nathan Hindmarsh to receive the 2011 Ken Thornett NRL Player of the Year Award at the Club's annual presentation.
A standout in almost every Eels match of 2011, the Kiwi international led the team with 3,068 running metres - sixth highest in the NRL - and 353 hit-ups for the season.
The 31-year-old capped a memorable night by taking out the Jack Gibson NRL Coach's Award - the first time a player has won both awards.
The Firehouse Restaurant at Parramatta Leagues Club saw the Eels' family come together to pay tribute the best performers during what was a tough 2011 season.
Interchange forward Mitchell Allgood took out the Eric Grothe NRL Rookie of the Year Award, with the 22-year-old a regular fixture in Stephen Kearney's side throughout the year, playing in all but one game in his first season in the top grade.
Experienced back-rower/centre Ben Smith was awarded the inaugural Ray Price NRL Community Award for his effort and commitment off the field in the club's various community initiatives.
In the Toyota Cup, outstanding young second-rower and 2010 Australian Schoolboy rep Matthew Eisenhuth picked up the Brett Kenny Coach's Award. Fresh from signing a new two-year deal with the Club, boom prop Peni Terepo was named Steven Ella NYC Players' Player Award winner.
Tonight the Eels' paid tribute to the top performers from feeder club Wentworthville, with Troy Savage picking up the Geoff Gerard NSW Cup Coach's Award and Manase Manuokafoa taking out the Bob O'Reilly NSW Cup Players' Player Award.
The Michael Cronin Clubman of the Year Award - given to an Eels player/employee who best displays the blue and gold club spirit, went to popular statistician and gear manager Les "Tex" Brooker.
A highlight of the evening was a presentation by the Lord Mayor of Parramatta, Councillor John Chedid, to Parramatta Leagues Club chief executive, Mr Bob Bentley. The Lord Mayor officially unveiled Eels Place, and in doing so, paid tribute to a club that has contributed so much to the fabric of the City of Parramatta.
"From the glory days of the 1980s and the likes of Sterling, Price, Kenny and Cronin - through to our modern-day stars of Cayless, Hayne, Moimoi and Hindmarsh - Parramatta's reputation as one of Australia's true footballing heartlands, is worthy of special recognition.
"Through the support of the Leagues Club and a passionate, and loyal, fan-base, the Eels have established themselves as one of the nation's well-known sporting brands.
"It is only fitting that Council officially acknowledge their contribution to the City and through the naming of Eels Place and pay tribute to the many men and women who've toiled hard over many decades to make the club what it is today."

Source: www.parraeels.com.auPIRTEK Parramatta Eels utility player Ben Smith will return to the centres to cover for the injured Ryan Morgan (ankle) for the away clash against Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park this Sunday.
Smith played the second half of last Saturday night's clash against North Queensland Cowboys at right centre after Morgan left the field, for the first time since early 2009.
Casey McGuire will make a timely return from a calf injury to the No. 9 jersey while dog bite victim Matt Keating is sidelined. Anthony Mitchell will pair with McGuire from the bench.
The only other change is Fuifui Moimoi returning to the 17 from a one-week suspension. He goes onto the bench with Justin Horo shuffling into the starting line-up in the lock position Smith held last week against the Cowboys.
