Smith and Holdsworth star for Reds in famous victory

Salford City Reds replicated their famous win over St Helens last season in a thrilling Engage Super League clash at The Willows.

This nip-and-tuck affair could have gone either way but Ryan Boyle's late score gave the Reds, who outscored their opponents eight tries to six, another memorable victory over the Saints, who came into this one on the back of a six-game winning run and desperate for two points to keep pace with leaders Wigan Warriors.

The Reds got off to the dream start with just over a minute on the clock.

Daniel Holdsworth sent up a colossal bomb and, after Jonny Lomax and Mark Henry had competed for the ball in the air, it came loose.

Matty Smith, playing against his hometown club, hacked the ball towards the posts and threw himself on top of it to score.

Salford increased their lead with a sensational second in the 11th minute.

Karl Fitzpatrick's pass set the whole move in motion and after the ball found the hands of Henry via Ashley Gibson, who shot away down the right, the Reds centre kicked infield and Holdsworth took it on the full before coasting under the sticks.

Holdsworth kicked both, before James Graham got St Helens on the comeback trail, the hulking forward taking a short pass from Kieron Cunningham and crashing over for a converted score on 15 minutes.

The hosts responded just three minutes later when Holdsworth linked in well and Henry's pass wide was taken well by eventual try-scorer Gibson, who did well to touch the ball down before skittling the corner flag.

Saints then came roaring back in the 20th minute with a try scored and converted by Kyle Eastmond.

The dynamic scrum-half took advantage of a back-tracking Salford defence, ducked under a couple of tackles and planted the ball on the whitewash.

The home side gave themselves a 10-point cushion in the 25th minute. It came when a high, hanging kick from Smith, who followed in to touch down after the ball bounced kindly, was spilled by Ade Gardner. Holdsworth made it three from four with the boot.

But Salford will have been kicking themselves as they conceded a try just two minutes before the interval, Paul Wellens stretching out to make the whitewash.

Eastmond had a try ruled out for obstruction before Smith claimed his hat-trick score in the 49th minute.

Holdsworth's kick wrong-footed the defence, Wellens back-pedalled and Gardner allowed the ball to bounce with Smith stealing in to pinch a try converted by Holdsworth.

Gardner made amends for some of his earlier errors in the 52nd minute after Leon Pryce's pass, as the ball was whipped wide, allowed him to go over on the right following three consecutive penalties.

But Salford put yet more points past the visitors just five minutes later, Gibson slipping past Scott Moore and racing for the line.

Holdsworth missed with the conversion and Graham forcefully grounded in the 62nd minute, with Eastmond's conversion making it a two-point game.

Salford's Jodie Broughton, who looked like he had nowhere to go, then somehow raced home from 30 metres out in the 68th minute, stepping past Wellens and fending off Cunningham.

But the Saints refused to lie down and hit back through Moore, who had a 73rd-minute score approved - benefit of the doubt - and Eastmond failed with the goal as he looked to level.

The points were sealed when an eighth Reds try arrived with four minutes to play.

Smith's grubber bounced back off Wellens and the most unlikely of scorers, prop Boyle, scooped the ball from the turf and crashed over to spark jubilant scenes.
