Source: www.raiders.com.auCanberra Raiders junior and current Penrith Panther, Nathan Smith, will return home to the nation's capital in 2009, after today agreeing to a new three year deal with the Green Machine.
Smith's three year deal will see him as a Raider again until the end of 2011, and he will be a welcome addition to the club he left at the end of 2006.
Originally playing in the backline as a winger, Smith has developed into a handy back rower in his two seasons at Penrith, and his ability to play in the centres makes him a more than handy acquisition for the Raiders.
Smith said he was looking forward to returning home and was excited about playing for the Raiders again in 2009, but would still maintain his focus with the Panthers this season.
"It's great to be going home to Canberra and I'm looking forward to playing some footy with some of my old mates, Canberra's where I grew up and it's a great place to live," Smith said.
"I still have some work to do here at the Panthers before I leave though, and I'll be giving them my best until the end of the year."Smith said he was excited to be returning to a side that was full of young talent, and looked forward to contributing to the team in 2009 and beyond.
"Obviously guys like Todd Carney and Joel Monaghan are players that would slot into any side so I'm keen to play with them," he said.
"The Raiders are a club on the up and I think they can only improve in the years ahead."Raiders CEO Don Furner said the club was happy that Smith has agreed to come back to the club, and was looking forward to having his impact in the side next year.
"Nathan wanted to return home and we thought his form over the past two seasons has warranted his return to Canberra," Furner said.
"He's developed into a great player, and we're really excited that he's returning to Canberra."Smith made his debut for the Raiders in 2004, but injury kept him sidelined for most of his time in Canberra, but since moving to the Panthers he's carved himself a reputation as being a consistent player, earning the John Farragher Award at the Panthers in 2007 for the player with the most courage and determination.

Sydney Roosters forward Anthony Tupou has been confirmed as the player Penrith lock Nathan Smith accused of biting him on the weekend.
Smith is believed to have told Sydney tabloid
'The Daily Telegraph' that a Roosters player who he refused to identify had bitten him during the Panthers narrow 24-20 loss in Saturday night's clash.
The NRL in it's weekly review of weekend action reported,
"Biting allegation raised in media by Smith against Tupou.
"Smith clearly wraps his arm around the head/face of Tupou in effecting the tackle. Contact with Tupou's mouth is initiated by Smith wrapping his arm around Tupou's face.
"Additional angles viewed of incident but difficult to identify any intentional action by Tupou.
"No evidence of biting to sustain a charge without a formal complaint.
"Panthers club contacted to request statement from player Smith regarding this incident which was declined by the player. No further action."The NRL match review panel headed up by Greg McCallum decided not to cite Tupou for the incident or Smith for the allegations made to the newspaper.
However, the NRL through Chief Operating Officer Graham Annesley wrote to the Panthers reminding them of the ramifications of making serious allegations and not going through with them.
The NRL is very strong on issues such as biting and eye gouging when a player makes a claim in the heat of the moment or in Smith's case to a newspaper and doesn't follow through with the allegations. While Smith was happy not to take action against Tupou, the NRL does not want players to make these allegations and than later on decide to back out of the process.
While some may view Smith's actions as heat of the moment and later decides to back down. The offences of eye gouging and biting are very serious and it leaves a slur on an innocent player and in this case Tupou's even though no action has been taken.
