Tim Smith Granted Leave
Mon April 14, 2008
Source: www.parraeels.com.au

Pirtek Parramatta Eels halfback Tim Smith has asked for and been given leave on personal grounds and will miss Friday's Telstra Premiership match against Manly at Parramatta Stadium.

Smith met with coaching staff and team mates after training today to inform them of his decision.

He later confirmed he is suffering from Bipolar Disorder.

Parramatta Eels CEO Denis Fitzgerald commended Smith for his decision.

"We have been very supportive of Tim and his situation and we will continue to support him," Mr. Fitzgerald said.

"It is good that Tim has come out publicly to say he has got Bipolar Disorder and that in this case it is important to not there has been no incident that's triggered this situation.

"The primary thing now is for Tim to be doing what he and his medical advisors think is best for him and we will give him all the support he needs to get better."

The below is a prepared statement that Tim Smith read out at this afternoon's media conference.

Tim Smith: This morning I made a request to the club to be stood down from this week's game. The coaching staff and club officials have agreed to grant me this leave. I have just had a meeting with my team mates to tell them of my actions and where I'm at.

I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder 18 months ago and in this time have been seeking professional advice and taking prescribed medication to try and help me deal with the day to day life of someone with Bipolar.

I am not using Bipolar Disorder as an excuse for anything that has happened in the past or my decision today. However I am not coping with the constant media pressure and public scrutiny.

The hardest thing about this has been telling my team mates, who have been extremely supportive and understanding, as well as the Parramatta club, and my family and close friends.

Thank you.

- The Parramatta Club will be making no further comment at this time.

Tim Smith wins call up for Knights clash
Tue March 25, 2008
Source: www.parraeels.com.au

Tim Smith will make his first appearance for the Pirtek Parramatta Eels this Telstra Premiership season when he lines up at halfback against Newcastle on Friday night.

Smith has been in fine touch for NSW Cup team Wentworthville after recovering from off-season shoulder surgery, playing two games including leading the Magpies to victory over the Auckland Vulcans on Sunday.

Head Coach Michael Hagan said the enigmatic playmaker's return means the Eels are one step closer to being at full strength for the first time this season.

"Tim's an important part of the team going forward and he's worked really hard to get to this stage," Hagan said.

"He's got confidence in his shoulder and has played some good footy for Wentworthville, which is what we had been hoping to happen.

"It's a credit to Tim and also to our medical, physiotherapy and conditioning staff that he's at this stage, which if anything came a bit earlier than originally expected.

"We're confident he'll slot straight back in alongside Brett Finch and also that his presence will allow Feleti Mateo a bit more room to attack."

Nathan Hindmarsh also returns to the side after missing the match against the Warriors with a virus.

The Eels play the Knights on Friday, kick off is at 7.30pm at Parramatta Stadium.

Meantime, Eels Toyota Cup head coach Matt Cameron has named an unchanged side to the one that toppled the Warriors 26-22 on Sunday in Auckland for Friday's clash with the Knights, that game to kick off at 5.20.
