Tue July 19, 2011
Source: www.dragons.com.au

St. George Bank Dragons Representatives Brett Morris and Jamie Soward will both make their milestone 100th Dragons appearances when they run-out against the Canberra Raiders at Canberra Stadium on Monday.

Morris, 24, made his first grade debut for the Dragons in Round 9 of the 2006 season against the Cronulla Sharks at Toyota Park after starting off his career within the Club's junior ranks.

Additionally, Soward, 26, will celebrate his milestone having made his first appearance for the Dragons in Round 12 of the 2007 season against the Brisbane Broncos at WIN Jubilee Oval, Kogarah.

The Wagga junior started his career with the Sydney Roosters in 2005 prior to joining the Dragons and has made a career total of 121 NRL appearances to date.

"We're both very proud and excited about the occasion after everything we have achieved with the Dragons so far," said Soward.

"It will be a challenge however facing Canberra as we haven't had the best record against them in recent seasons but we'll be looking to change that.

"The team are focused and have every intention of being ready for the Raiders come Monday night."

The Fall and Rise of Jamie Soward
Thu May 19, 2011
by Nick Campton
The selection of Jamie Soward in the NSW Origin team this week adds another chapter to one of the most intriguing and varied rugby league careers of recent times.

Soward has gone from a defensive punch line, to an adequate first grader until finally evolving into a player whose composure and skill have almost no equal in the modern game.

The first time the name Soward appeared on the rugby league landscape was Grand Final day 2004. A 19 year old five-eighth was starring in the Sydney Roosters Jersey Flegg side, scoring points almost at will in a team which contained future first graders Sam Perrett, Heath L'estrange, Jermain Ale and Michael Lett. The undefeated Roosters marched into the Grand Final against Cronulla, with Soward racking up an almost superhuman 351 points over the course of the season. Soward showed great skill and maturity in steering a visibly nervous Roosters team to a 14-13 victory over the plucky Sharks outfit, kicking two field goals, including an extra time winner.

Hours later, as the career of legendary Rooster Brad Fittler wound down, the smart money was on this prodigiously talented team to ensure the continuation of the Roosters dynasty, with Soward to be the new talisman, the heir apparent to Freddy's throne. In Round 9, 2005 Soward's first grade odyssey began in a 32-2 victory over the winless Newcastle Knights. Soward was promising on debut, showing glimpses of the talent that had seen so many pundits mark him for greatness.

He dipped in and out of first grade for the remainder of the year, his all-round skill offset by an obvious immaturity, which manifested itself in poor decision making and occasional brain explosions that are typical of many young halves coming through the ranks. Once the kinks were ironed out, the boy from Canberra was going to be a star and who else to mentor him but former masterful half Ricky Stuart, himself a player whose spiraling passes and prodigious kicking game so mirrored Soward's.

As season 2006 began, Soward found himself forming a halves combination with Braith Anasta, relegating incumbent halfback Brett Finch to hooker. Despite a promising start, Soward was eventually shunted in and out of first grade in what was meant to be his watershed year. Whispers began of poor discipline, of an unwillingness to work hard on the training paddock and a rift with coach Stuart. Josh Lewis eventually took his place in the top grade, forcing Soward to see out the season with Newtown.

On Grand Final day 2006, Soward ran out for Newtown against the Parramatta Eels, on the same field he had wowed the rugby league world only 2 years previously. It defies belief that this was the same player. Gone was the light stepping prodigy with the golden boots, in his place was a rudderless wreck, a player determined to make the big plays on his own, to impose himself on a game with no regard for the needs of the team.

The emergence of Mitchell Pearce, another half branded with a messianic tag, in early 2007 looked to relegate Soward to the realms of mediocrity forever. He seemed destined to join the Andrew Dunneman's and Joe Williams' of the world; players who oozed class and poise, seducing and teasing with their obvious talent but ultimately became relegated to the footnotes of footballing mediocrity.

In a strange twist of fate, Soward played his final game for the Sydney Roosters against the Cronulla Sharks in Round 11 of 2007. In a performance that hinted at a more mature Jamie Soward, and hinted at echoes of his true potential, he was a solid at the scrum base in a 13-12 victory.

Later that week, Soward was released by the Roosters to take up a contract with the St George-Illawarra Dragons, a team of much style, but little substance. On debut, Soward kicked a vital field goal to secure an 11-4 win over a Brisbane side that many had expected to rack up a cricket score, and while not overly impressive, he certainly performed adequately. The following week, Soward gave the greatest performance of his short career thus far, decimating a hapless Canberra Raiders with consummate ease, scoring 22 points in a 58-22 demolition. Soward played 12 games for St George that season, and looked to have finally begun a career that had endured numerous false starts.

After a slow start to 2008, Soward and the Dragons began to click, culminating in a 7 match winning streak in the middle of the year. However, in an astonishing move from coach Nathan Brown, Soward was dropped in favour of South Sydney recruit Ben Rogers, a player whose ball playing abilities were outweighed by his inconsistency. The shocked reaction of the rugby league community at this move showed just how far Soward had come since his days at the Roosters. Rogers was released at seasons end, indicating that incoming master coach Wayne Bennett intended to use Soward as his playmaker, a great show of from the shrewd Queenslander.

The doubters and naysayers who had crucified Soward on his defence were given even more ammunition following Round 1 of 2009. Few will ever forget Greg Inglis' monstrous fend on the diminutive playmaker, causing him to go airborne, and many shook their heads at Bennett's retention of Soward the following week, arguing that while his attack was improving, he was simply too much of a liability in defence to be of ay use to the Dragons.

But as the season progressed, something strange began to happen. The Dragons began to string wins together. And at the heart of it was Soward. With his blistering pace and dancing feet, an unparalleled long kicking game, unerringly accurate goal kicking, and a composure and confidence that had always been lacking from his game. Case in point was the Round 5 clash with Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium, a match of tremendous intensity and pressure. With the Broncos looking like they would be on the verge of a storming comeback, Soward's managed to swoop on a loose pass and send Brett Morris 60 metres to score, and secure the win for St George. On ANZAC day, Soward scored 21 points in a sublime performance against the Roosters, completely dominating Mitchell Pearce, the man who replaced him at the Roosters.

It seemed ever week Soward was pulling new tricks from the bag, and even when the Dragons began to fade late in the year, Soward was still the biggest attacking threat they had. He won third place in the Dally M, with only a freakish burst of form from Jarryd Hayne preventing him from claiming the title. Most tellingly, for a man who was once the most maligned footballer in living memory, Soward won the Provan-Summons Medal as the people's choice for player of the year.

While he did not have the same week-to-week impact in 2010, Soward cemented himself as one of the elite playmakers in the game, as the Dragons became the masters of grinding out tough wins, mainly due to Soward's precision kicking game.

A controversial omission from the NSW side, Soward's finest hour came in the finals series. After kicking the winning field goal in the preliminary final against Wests Tigers, Soward came up against his former club, the Sydney Roosters, in the Grand Final. Opposing him once again was Mitchell Pearce, the man for whom he had been discarded. Pearce was deemed to be the new chosen one, the golden boy, and the man who was meant to erase all the painful Eastern Suburbs memories of Jamie Soward. On the biggest stage of all Soward delivered what had became the typical Soward performance, a composed and meticulous dismantling, leaving Pearce by the wayside as he came full circle from the tempestuous youngster that had promised so much but delivered little, ascending to the upper echelon of rugby league players.

The deserved gaining of an Origin berth is a just reward for a player who has proven the doubters wrong a thousand times over. The extremities of the fall and rise of Jamie Soward will ensure his story remains at the forefront of rugby league lore for many years to come.
