Source: www.sharks.com.auThe St George and Sutherland Shire Leader have announced the 'Sharks Dream Team', celebrating 40-years of the Cronulla Sharks.
A panel comprising Leader Sports Editor Brad Forrest, Sharks biographer and respected author Gary Lester, Dr Peter Malouf, 39-years the medical officer at the Sharks and long-serving official Jim Geraghty, had the difficult task of finalising the 17-player squad.
"So many players deserve recognition but only 17 make it," Lester said.
"(But) for the lack of a premiership success, the selection process did show up one fact. There has been no lack of quality in the Cronulla Sharks players over the 40 years."Englishman Tommy Bishop, the man who came within a whisker of steering the Sharks to a premiership victory back in 1973, was named halfback and captain of the 'Dream Team', with the team comprising players from three countries, Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain.
Brett Kimmorley, who was chosen on a four-man bench, was the only current player selected, while David Peachey, now playing for Souths, and the recently-retired Jason Stevens, were also named.
The father-son duo of Steve and Mat Rogers were teamed together in the Sharks backline, believed to be a first for any "greatest team" named in rugby league club history.
And in a statistic to emphasise the quality of the team, the 17-man squad played more than 100 test matches and 100 State of Origin games in total between them.
A special souvenir Sharks 40th Anniversary booklet was included in today's (Thursday's) edition of the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader, with the majority of the Leader Sharks Dream Team to be in attendance at the Sharks Community Fair, to be held at Endeavour Field, adjacent to Toyota Park this coming Sunday.
The Inaugural Sharks Community Fair includes carnival rides, food stalls and a variety of entertainment acts performing on stage. The Community Fair will run from 10am-2pm, with the 2006 Sharks NRL squad to also be in attendance and on stage from 11am.
The Leader Sharks Dream Team is as follows:
Fullback - David Peachey
Wingers - Mat Rogers, Roy Corcoran
Centres - Steve Rogers, Andrew Ettingshausen
Five eighth - Chris Wellman
Halfback - Tommy Bishop
Lock - Greg Pierce
Second row - Gavin Miller, Ken Maddison
