The South Sydney Rabbitohs have one of the richest histories in Rugby League. Established in 1908, the South Sydney Club has won 20 first grade premierships and provided 62 internationals for the Australian side, and have famously worn their cardinal red and myrtle green colours since inception. The rebirth of the Rabbitohs began on 7 June, 2006 through a new partnership between Russell Crowe, Peter Holmes a Court and the then 8000 Members of the Club. The Rabbitohs made the semi-finals for the first time in 18 years in 2007, and strengthened their Ticketed Membership to over 12,000 with over 20,000 Total Members in 2011.

Rabbitohs retain Charity Shield

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have retained the Charity Shield after playing out a 26-all draw with the St George Illawarra Dragons at ANZ Stadium in front of 27,221 Members and supporters.

The 27,000-plus crowd, a record for Charity Shield matches played at ANZ Stadium, saw Rabbitohs winger Fetuli Talanoa score three tries, but they dramatically saw Dragons' five-eighth Jamie Soward miss a conversion attempt from the left-hand touchline that could have won his side the Shield.

Both sides scored five tries-a-piece with the Dragons having the opportunity to steal the win after scoring an 80th minute try through Brett Morris.

The opening exchanges were tough and fast, with captain Roy Asotasi chasing down a Dragons attacker and cleaning him up in cover defence to save a try in the seventh minute of play.

The video referee denied Morris a try in the ninth minute after a spectacular cover tackle from centre Beau Champion bundled Morris into touch before he could touch down in the left hand corner.

Talanoa scored his first try in the tenth minute, after his centre partner Colin Best attracted two defenders and offloaded to Talanoa who scored. Chris Sandow converted to give his side a six-nil lead.

The Dragons struck back in the 19th minute of play through winger Jason Nightingale. Best appeared to be taken out in the lead-up play, but the video referee awarded the try. Jamie Soward's conversion levelled the scores at six-all.

Eleven minutes later, Talanoa scored his second in miraculous fashion, gathering a Sandow kick to the corner to score millimetres from touch. Sandow converted from the sideline to reinstate the six-point lead.

Nightingale was not to be out done, scoring his second try for the night in the 32nd minute, a gapping hole down the right hand side giving him a saloon passage to the line. Soward'd sideline conversion levelled the scores at 12-all.

In the 37th minute, Brett Morris scored his first try to give the Dragons a four-point lead at the break.

The Rabbitohs opened the second half in style with Ben Lowe scoring in the 45th minute. An inside ball from John Sutton found Nathan Merritt, who made the bust and found Lowe backing up on his inside to score. Sandow converted to give the Rabbitohs a two-point advantage, 18-16.

Talanoa then scored his third try in the 51st minute after pouncing on a Sutton grubber kick to the corner.

The Dragons levelled the scores Nick Emmett scored three minutes later, another Jamie Soward conversion levelling the scores at 22-all.

The Rabbitohs wrestled back the lead in the 67th minute when Nathan Merritt collected a Sandow chip kick, giving the Rabbitohs a 26-22 lead with about ten minutes remaining on the clock.

The Rabbitohs' little men were taking hold of the game and the Rabbitohs looked to have the game won, but Morris' try in the final minute levelled the scores at 26-all giving Soward the opportunity to snatch the win. His conversion attempt shaved the face of the goals, leaving the Rabbitohs to retain the title after the fourth draw in Charity Shield history.

Sutton was dominant with ball in hand. Whether he decided to run or pass, he had the opposition guessing as to what he would produce next. The Rabbitohs were getting good go-forward out of their own end, and Issac Luke showed his physical strength each time he ran the ball or completed a tackle.

Rabbitohs Head Coach John Lang said his side will take a lot out of tonight's performance.

"It was a good hit out, but I was a little disappointed that we blew a match-winning lead," Lang said.

"We were a bit underdone tonight, and we'll be a bit underdone for the first fixture.

"We need to focus on the basics, as we have the talent there and we can combine as a team."

Lang said he was happy with his much-hyped forward pack.

"I like to start and finish with my best pack on the field," Lang explained.

"It depends on how the game goes as to how I work my pack during the game."

Lang said he was pleased with the effort from his team tonight, including his number six John Sutton.

"I was happy with Sutto's performance, over this week and last week," Lang said.

"His efforts have been very good especially since he is one of the guys I'm referring too when I say we'll be underdone.

"Chrissy (Sandow) had some nice touches tonight too.

"I think they would enjoy playing behind this pack.

"We were good in patches last week, and we were good in more patches tonight."

Captain Roy Asotasi said his side has a few things to work on before taking on the Roosters in round one.

"We made crucial errors tonight, but that's why we have these games. So we can work on them before the season starts," Asotasi said.

"It's a gradual process.

"We seemed to be tackling by ourselves. We need to work on that."

Asotasi said thoughts of his previously injured knee disappeared after his first run with the ball.

"I got some advice from Joey before the game saying 'just take the first hit up and you'll be right after that.'," Asotasi said.

"That was some good advice from Joey!"

The Rabbitohs will now prepare for their round one clash with the Sydney Roosters on Sunday 14 March at 3pm at ANZ Stadium, the 200th encounter between the two Foundation Clubs.

South Sydney Rabbitohs 26 (Fetuli Talanoa 3, Ben Lowe, Nathan Merritt tries; Chris Sandow 3 goals)
drew with
St George Illawarra Dragons 26 (Jason Nightingale 2, Brett Morris 2, Nick Emmett tries; Jamie Soward 3 goals)

In the Toyota Cup match the South Sydney Rabbitohs ground out a narrow six points to four win over the St George Illawarra Dragons Charity Shield match.

Junior Vaivai scored the Rabbitohs only try, with Adam Reynolds' sideline conversion making the difference.

The Rabbitohs' centres of Dylan Farrell and Vaivai looked dangerous in space, with Kane Morgan also making good in roads in attack.

South Sydney Rabbitohs 6 (Junior Vaivai try; Adam Reynolds goal)
defeated
St George Illawarra Dragons 4
