Irish desperate for a second chance
Thu October 30, 2008
by Darren Flynn
Ireland Wolfhounds prop Ryan Tandy says his side is desperate for a second chance, after Monday night's heart-breaking two-point loss to Tonga at Parramatta Stadium.

The Irish led with 10 minutes to go in the pool 3 opener, but couldn't close it out, conceding a late try to go down 22-20.

The Wests Tigers prop says while most observers felt the Irish did well to get so close, the Wolfhounds players were disappointed not to start their campaign with a win.

"We were always confident we could stand up to (the Tongans). We were probably the only ones who believed we could win the game, but that just made it all the more disappointing for us, to come so close only to fall short.

"I guess everyone's got to put their hand up for that and take some responsibility for the loss. We sort of lost it for ourselves in the end there, we found ourselves in the lead, but we blew it", Tandy said.

The Wolfhounds can still qualify for the semi-final play-off, but only if Samoa beat Tonga in tomorrow night's pool C clash.

And if given an opportunity to progress, Tandy believes the Irish will grasp it with both hands.

"We were all very frustrated after Monday's loss, but I think we can use that to our advantage against Samoa on Wednesday night.

"There's a lot of talent in this team and we all know what we're capable of. We need Samoa to beat Tonga tomorrow night to be in control of our own destiny again and if that happens, then we give ourselves every chance of winning the group", Tandy said.

And the 27-year-old enforcer is in no doubt as to where his side will need to improve if they are to beat Samoa next Wednesday night.

"We need to hold onto the ball. I think we had a 50% completion rate in the first half against Tonga and that's just not good enough.

"If we make the same mistake against Samoa, they'll run all over the top of us."

Tandy said the World Cup presented the perfect opportunity for the young Wolfhounds players to showcase their talents to the rugby league world.

"There's a few young guys in the team, guys like Sean Gleeson and Ben Harrison, who are only 20 and 21 years of age, who would love to come out to Australia and test themselves out in the NRL.

"Damien Blanch is another one. He started off in Australia, but never got a chance to play first grade while he was here.

"I think all three guys excelled themselves on Monday night against Tonga and really showcased their talents. And who knows, if they turn in another good performance against Samoa, they might catch the eye of an NRL club", Tandy said.

And the same goes for Tandy himself, who is looking for a fresh opportunity to play regular NRL matches after a frustrating year at the Wests Tigers.

"I've got a one year option in my favour at the Tigers but I'm keen to move on.

"I felt I was playing well enough to get more game time at the Tigers, but Tim Sheens didn't pick me. He's got his reasons I suppose, but now, I'm just keen to get a fresh start at another club.

"I'm talking with three clubs at the moment, and hopefully I'll have a new deal sorted in the next week.

"A couple of strong hit outs for Ireland definitely won't do me any harm", Tandy said.

Wests Tigers Coach Tim Sheens has named his team to play Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on Friday, June 20, in round 15 of the Telstra Premiership.

Former St George-Illawarra, South Sydney, Widnes Vikings and Hull KR forward Ryan Tandy will make his club debut for Wests Tigers at prop.

A Central Coast junior, 26-year-old Tandy spent 2002 and half of 2003 at St George-Illawarra where he played three first grade games.

After leaving St George-Illawarra, Tandy played three first grade games at South Sydney in 2003.

He then played first grade for Widnes Vikings in the English Super League from 2004-2006 before playing first grade for Hull KR in 2007.

Tandy has spent this season playing for the Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers in the NSW Cup.

Meanwhile, Wests Tigers second-rower Chris Heighington and lock Dene Halatau will play their 100th first grade games against the Broncos.

Heighington made his first grade debut for Wests Tigers against St George-Illawarra at Telstra Stadium in the opening round of the 2003 season.

Halatau made his first grade debut for Wests Tigers against Manly at Leichhardt Oval in round 13 of the 2003 season.

In other team news, winger Taniela Tuiaki (infected arm) and forward Liam Fulton (shoulder) return from injury.

Prop Luke Harlen makes his club debut for Wests Tigers after being named on the interchange bench. Harlen played two first grade games for Cronulla after making his top grade debut for the Sharks against Manly at Brookvale Oval in round three of the 2006 season.
