Updated: Bird out for 4 weeks, three Sharks charged
Mon July 16, 2007
by James Stewart
The devastating injury toll from last weekends NRL action has claimed another victim with Cronulla's Greg Bird likely to be ruled out for four weeks with a broken thumb.

Initially we reported that Bird was set to miss eight weeks requiring surgery on the thumb but this afternoon he received better news that the bone was not displaced and will return in half the time.

"The bone hasn't been displaced at all and I'm going to get away with just having a cast on it for four weeks and I'll be back straight after that," said Bird.

Bird out for 4 weeks is still terrible news for the Sharks who also have key playmakers Brett Kimmorley and Adam Dykes on the sideline along with goalkicking winger Luke Covell.

Ben Ross is also out for another two weeks through suspension.

The news is compounded today with three Sharks players charged by the match review committee.

Cronulla skipper Paul Gallen. Anthony Watts and winger Misi Talaupapa were hit with contrary conduct charges following an all-in brawl midway through the second half the Sharks loss to the Roosters.

All three Sharks players facing a minimum one-game ban with early guilty pleas.

In other judiciary news Manly's Steve Matai will miss two matches with an early plea for headbutting Wests Tigers forward Chris Heighington

The Rabbitohs Jeremy Smith is facing a one-game ban for striking the head of a Parramatta player.

The Dragons Chase Stanley will escape suspension with an early plea one a a grade one dangerous throw.

Warriors terminate Misi Taulapapa's contract

Vodafone Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah today announced the club had terminated winger Misi Taulapapa's National Rugby League contract.

Taulapapa (24) was stood down from last Sunday's clash against Brisbane for a breach of team discipline.

"The matter involved alcohol and it was especially disappointing that it happened just 48 hours before a game," said Scurrah.

"The situation was made worse by the fact Misi had previously been given three official warnings after similar breaches.

"Behaviour of this type is neither acceptable nor professional and, in the circumstances, we sadly have no choice but to terminate Misi's contract.

"It's apparent to us that he has some issues with alcohol. We have offered him assistance previously and we will continue to help him with the problem.

"If he can show he is prepared to help himself, we would look at the possibility of offering him a pathway back into the club in the future."

After making his first-grade debut against South Sydney last month, Taulapapa had only recently signed a new one-year contract for 2007 with an option for second year in 2008.

"Alcohol is an issue in rugby league and in sport generally and we're determined to send out a message about it to all of our players. It's unfortunate to take action as extreme as this but we will do so if the circumstances dictate it," said Scurrah.

Taulapapa leaves the Vodafone Warriors after playing in five matches this year.
