New Jim Beam Cup side
Mon November 20, 2006

Former Bulldogs greats Geoff Robinson and Garry Hughes have teamed up with hotelier Arthur Laundy to establish the Chester Hill Jim Beam Cup side - and they're looking for Rugby League players and sponsors.

Between them, Robinson, who is coach, and Hughes, who is manager, have played over 300 first grade games and were part of the Bulldogs sides from the 1980's that were known as "The Entertainers" for their classy, winning style of play.

Now they hope to pass on as much of that experience as possible to young league players.

Mr Laundy will be club's financial controller.

And of course, the idea for the team was first suggested in a pub.

"I turned up at the pub one day and Arthur asked where I'd been. I told him I'd travelled over to Fairfield to watch the young fellas play," Robinson said.

"Arthur just said, why don't we get a team up over here. And that was that.

"Arthur's always wanted to do something for the community and this is a great way."

Hughes said the Chester Hill team will offer young players another opportunity to make grade, if talks this week are successful.

And what do they hope to achieve in their first year? "Just be competitive," Hughes said.

"We'll build on it from there."

Former Bulldogs first grader David Thompson is the club's first signing, but Hughes said they are in discussion with several other quality players.

The team will be based at Terry Lamb Complex at Chester Hill and the first training run will be on Sunday, November 26 at Lake Gillawarna.

If you're interested in playing for or sponsoring the team contact Garry Hughes on 0430 111 907.
