Veteran Brisbane lock Tonie Carroll is out of Sunday's all-Queensland blockbuster against North Queensland at Suncorp Stadium due to a hamstring injury, which gives former International Brad Thorn an opportunity after being dropped to the Queensland Cup.
Thorn was resigned to playing in the Queensland Cup this weekend after being dropped from the Broncos line-up for Sunday's clash against the Cowboys along with fellow Maroons representative forward Corey Parker.
However, Carroll's injury means Thorn has the opportunity to impress and show to coach Wayne Bennett that he belongs at NRL level.
Thorn said of his selection today,
"I was not dirty at Wayne but missing selection stung me. You train extremely hard the entire pre-season and to miss selection in the first game is very disappointing.
"Wayne said I was flat during the trials and really needed to work on my defence, areas I will be looking to get up to scratch this Sunday.
"It's been a bit of a roller-coaster for me this week after coming back into the side but things have turned around quickly and am really glad to be back."Sunday's clash against last year's Grand Finalists will be a tough one for the Broncos with Thorn saying,
"It's going to be tough.
"Their pack is really mobile pack, have a great work rate and plenty of character; qualities that played a big part in getting the Cowboys to the grand final."Thorn's omission earlier in the week was a strong message from Bennett that no-one's position is safe and that everyone has to earn their spot in the side. Thorn said,
"Wayne has made it clear no ones position is safe this year. We want to achieve big things this year, so we always need the best 17 out on the paddock.
"If premierships want to be won, then the coaches sometimes have to make big calls and Wayne did that with me on Monday."A crowd of over 40,000 will be in attendance but there's still ticket's for Sunday's clash at Suncorp Stadium. It's best to pre-book Tickets, which you can for Broncos games via www.ticketek.com.au or ring 132 849.

Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett has thrown reputations out the window by omitting Queensland representative players Brad Thorn and Corey Parker for the Broncos opening round clash against North Queensland at Suncorp Stadium this coming Sunday.
Four new faces have been included in the Broncos side including debutant schoolboys winger Darius Boyd. Bennett has also included Roosters recruit Ben Hannant, ex-Dragons hooker Michael Ennis and former Wests and Canterbury utility Shane Perry. It's a remarkable return for Perry, 28, who last played at NRL level in 2001 and has spent the last four seasons with Queensland Cup club Redcliffe Dolphins.
Brisbane will be without forward Sam Thaiday (knee), centre Brent Tate (ankle) and hooker Barry Berrigan (groin) but welcome back captain Darren Lockyer (foot), halfback Brett Seymour (shoulder), centre Shaun Berrigan (wisdom teeth), centre Justin Hodges (neck), backrower David Stagg (hamstring) and lock Tonie Carroll (elbow) who were missing during the pre-season trials.
The omissions of Thorn and Parker are a massive shock as both played for Queensland last year and Thorn has represented Australia in Rugby League and New Zealand in Rugby Union. Prop forward and Broncos vice-captain Shane Webcke said,
"It's very good for the club given that we've got a lot of players who are up to first grade standard.
"Obviously there's going to be disappointment. The other thing to remember about us is that we've got a lot of players who have been injured coming fit at the one time."Webcke also said that the Broncos have adopted to a new training programme during the off-season to accomodate to the way Rugby League has been changing in recent years with the Broncos still caught in the power game they successfully used in 2000 but has since been obselete. Webcke said,
"We are not really breaking new ground, we are catching up the ground that we've given away over the last couple of years.
"You look at the way the Wests Tigers and the Cowboys have played. I think that's where we have to get to, to match them ? use the ball more and being a bit different to what we've been. We needed to be lighter, fitter, faster and need to use the ball more."BRONCOS: Karmichael Hunt, Steve Michaels, Justin Hodges, Shaun Berrigan, Darius Boyd, Darren Lockyer (c), Brett Seymour, Shane Webcke, Michael Ennis, Petero Civoniceva, Dane Carlaw, David Stagg, Tonie Carroll. Subs: Casey McGuire, Ben Hannant, Neville Costigan, Shane Perry.
