Source: www.raiders.com.auThe Canberra Raiders have dedicated three of their 'Team Challenge Friday's' this pre-season to visiting schools in the region and started today with a trip to Trevor Thurling's old school and Adopt-A-Raider school, Queanbeyan West primary.
The whole Green Machine squad spent time signing autographs and meeting their young fans, before staying on for the school assembly and presenting the children with awards for the school term.
The players then crossed the road to nearby Freebody Oval, where they had their pre-season team challenge for the afternoon as students from the school watched on.
It's the first of three planned visits over the next few weeks, as the Raiders travel around Canberra, to St Francis of Assisi in Calwell in Canberra's South and Harrison primary school in Canberra's North.
Former student Trevor Thurling said it was great to be back at his old school in his hometown and said the team enjoyed mixing up their pre-season with visits such as this.
"I'm from Q-Town and went to school here so to see everyone here so excited is a great thing and I hope the kids enjoyed having us come along today," Thurling said. "Its also a chance for us to train at some different venues during the pre-season to mix it up a bit and have some support while we're training is also a good thing."
Terry Campese was another hometown favourite who made his way to the school for the visit and he backed up Thurling's thoughts on the day.
"Queanbeyan is a big part of the Raiders family so we like to get out here and get behind the community," Campese said. "There are also a lot of members out this way and hopefully a few of these kids take the membership books home with them and sign up their families for next year."
Campese said his recovery from knee surgery was progressing well and he said he's hope to be back ahead of schedule.
"The surgeon, club doctor and physio have all said my knee is recovering well and I hope to be running sooner than expected," Campese said. "I want to be back as soon as possible but at the same time need to make sure I'm right to go."

Source: www.raiders.com.auCanberra Raiders dynamic forward Trevor Thurling will remain with the Raiders until at least the end of 2013, after he signed a new three year deal today to remain with the Green Machine.
Thurling, 26, has been in career best form in 2010 for the Raiders in a forward pack which has healthy competition for positions, with Thurling's ability to play in a number of positions a key in his re-signing.
The Queanbeyan junior fielded offers from other NRL clubs to move away from Canberra, but said he decided to stay with the Raiders for a number of reasons.
"I wanted to weigh up all my options and as it was the first time I was off contract in eight years I wanted to make sure I covered all possibilities," Thurling said. "There was some interest in other clubs but I've decided to stay here in Canberra and I know it's the right decision.
"It was a decision I didn't want to rush I wanted to make sure I stayed for right reasons and that happened this week after sitting down with my family, friends and the Coaching staff and I'm happy," he said. "I've also got two young daughters as well and staying close to them was a main priority."
Thurling said the rise of the Raiders junior players into senior football was another reason to stay with the club and said he only saw a bright future for the team.
"Everyone always mentions the good young playing group we have here and I think this year you only have to look at the guys coming through like Josh Dugan, Joel Thompson and Dan Vidot and see its true," he said. "If we can all stay together I really believe we can push for a premiership."
Raiders Coach David Furner said the club was ecstatic to have Thurling remain in Canberra and predicted a big future for the still young forward.
"I think it's very important for the club. Trevor is a local player and he's getting to an age now where I think he's best footy is still ahead of him," Furner said. "He's shown this year he's starting to develop his game and he's a player who can play front row, middle unit and on the edge. The way the game is developing at the moment he's an important player to have and the most important thing is his character within the side."
