Tickle signs new Hull FC deal
Sat June 19, 2010
Source: www.hullfc.com

Hull FC have today confirmed that sought-after second-rower Danny Tickle has agreed a new contract at the club.

It's rumoured that the Black and Whites have fought off strong competition from other clubs to secure Tickle's signature for a further three years.

Speaking to www.hullfc.com, Tickle said, "Ultimately I want to win some trophies, I have been close now on four occasions and still not achieved it, so that was a major part of my decision and why I have chosen to stay at Hull.

"It is a club I love, with some great people. The staff, the coaches and all the players are great and I have some really good friends here," he said.

Tickle has taken some time to make his decision before putting pen to paper on his new deal, but in the end he could only settle for one outcome.

"It is a decision I wanted to take some time over and it has been on my mind a lot recently and I had to consider what was best for me and my family," Tickle commented.

"However, I made the decision easy for myself when I knew I wanted success because I feel that Hull FC is where I can achieve something."

The former Wigan and Halifax man also added, "Rich is a great coach and a good bloke and he has assembled a really good squad with some talented players and I think we can really achieve something here, so I wanted to be part of that.

"It is a club where I feel I have developed and learned a lot from various people and now I want to repay that by playing to my best and helping them lift a trophy."

Hull FC head coach Richard Agar is delighted that Tickle has agreed a new deal and knows he is a big player for the Black and Whites.

"I am delighted that we have secured the services of Danny on a longer term deal, he plays a lot of games, a lot of minutes and is a top line goal kicker for us and for those reasons he would be an integral part of any side," he said.

"He is a player that brings a lot to the table, he is an important part of the group and the rest of the boys enjoy playing with him."

Agar added, "We know it was a difficult decision for him as he had a lot to consider, most importantly his family and we have done all we can to support him and we are understandably delighted that he sees his future at the KC Stadium.

"We are pleased he is committed to Hull FC and committed to trying to achieve success here and we feel he can be a vital part of realising our ambitions over the next few seasons."

Tickle, who will play his 100th game for Hull against Huddersfield Giants on Sunday, has been one of the standout players for Richard Agar's side this term.

During his three and half seasons so far he has proved to be one of the clubs most influential players, helping them to the Challenge Cup Final in 2008 in which he scored three goals.

Now though, Tickle has his eyes set on a repeat appearance in a major final, but this time, with a more positive outcome to repay the unwavering support from the Old Faithful who never fail to impress him.

"Everyone in the world of Rugby League knows what the KC Stadium is all about on match days, but until you actually play here for Hull in front of the home fans here, you'd never go back anywhere else," he said.

"We have had a few difficult years since I got here, but they have never gone away, they have always stood by us and they are superb.

"It's great that I now have a further three years here and I hope that I can play my part in putting a few smiles on some of their faces as part of a winning team."

With a new deal now sorted and a further three years to try and achieve some silverware, Tickle's immediate priority is a Super League show down with the Huddersfield Giants and the small matter of his 100th appearance for the club.

The 27-year-old has made 13 appearances so far this season scoring 3 tries and 46 goals, helping him to a Hull FC tally of 25 tries and 314 goals adding up to a staggering 729 points in 99 appearances, including of course, his magic last minute drop goal against St.Helens just two weeks ago.

In fact, Tickle's points scoring achievements have been that good since making his debut for the Airlie Birds in 2007, just ten points at the weekend against the Giants would see him become the 14th highest points scorer for Hull FC as well as the 12th highest goal scorer in Hull FC history.

"When I saw the statistics this week, it did surprise me a little bit, but I have had a great time here at Hull FC and long may it continue," he said.

"To play your 100th game for any club is a great achievement, it is something I am looking forward to and I am sure it will be a mammoth one.

"The timing probably couldn't be any better for me to get my 100th game and to celebrate a new contract at the same time, so it will be a memorable occasion and we'll do all we can to get a win."

Tickle sinks Saints despite Meli's heroics

Boyhood St Helens fan Danny Tickle kicked a 78th-minute drop goal as Hull produced one of the most stunning comebacks the Super League has seen as they rocked the Saints with four answered tries in a breathtaking second-half at the KC Stadium.

Francis Meli's maiden four-try haul in the English game had given Mick Potter's side what had looked to be an unassailable 26-6 lead with little over 30 minutes remaining, only for the home side to respond with an unstoppable barrage that resulted in them registering three successive wins for the first time this season.

With both sides scoring five tries and missing two goals, the scores were locked at 26-26 when Tickle split the posts from 30 metres out to send the majority of the 13,300 crowd into a frenzy.

The result leaves Saints coach Potter with plenty of questions to answer as his side, missing England star Kyle Eastmond for the first time this season, badly lost their way in the second-half.

That will not bother opposite number Richard Agar too much, though, as his men moved to within two points of the Saints as they consolidated their fourth place.

Hull started well and it was of little surprise when they opened the scoring after 10 minutes.

Tom Briscoe had already been dumped into touch by Jonny Lomax as he looked set to score when the try came, with Briscoe showing admirable strength to drive his way over after Willie Manu's superb offload.

St Helens' rode the early storm though, and levelled things up five minutes later as Meli, back after a three-game absence, leapt above Richard Whiting to take in Scott Moore's kick.

James Roby would have added another try moments later had his snaking run not ended with him colliding with a post, before Meli took in another ball from Moore, this time a pass, to give his side a 20th-minute lead.

Hull had no answer to the momentum Saints had built up, and veteran hooker Keiron Cunningham took full advantage of their increasing vulnerability as he bounced over the line following a 15-metre run.

Hull managed to tame their visitors for a time after that, but Saints rediscovered their rhythm two minutes before the half-time hooter as Meli took advantage of a six-on-one overlap to net his third Super League hat-trick.

His first four-try salvo came shortly after the restart as he made light work of Jordan Tansey and Danny Washbrook's attempted tackles, before Jordan Turner gave Hull hope of a comeback when he stepped his way in with 32 minutes left.

With England hooker Roby leaving the field after a heavy collision, Hull turned hope into a reality as Danny Houghton pounced on a loose ball after Long's kick to slip in under the posts and bring his side back to within eight points.

It was now the Saints' turn to be rattled and Willie Manu brought Hull even closer to them with a close-range bump over the line following Houghton's pass ? although Tickle was unable to convert on this occasion.

Tickle quickly redeemed himself, though, as he pounced on another Meli handling error from another long kick to score in the corner, with another failed conversion tying the scores at 26-all.

Ex-Saints playmaker Sean Long saw a drop goal attempt fall agonisingly short, before Tickle found the mark.
