Motu Tony out for 14 weeks
Fri May 9, 2008
by Matthew O'Neill
Source: www.hullfc.com

Kiwi international Motu Tony has been ruled out for 14 weeks with a ruptured knee ligament.

The 26-year-old full back was given the news after seeing a specialist earlier in the week and he said: "Naturally I am bitterly disappointed but I can't do anything about it.

"Unfortunately, injuries are part of the game and, although you hope you don't cop a bad one sometimes you do and you have to live with it.

"I've just got to get on with it and make sure my knee is strong and I am fully fit when I can play again."

The one piece of good news is Tony doesn't need an operation and he will spend two months in a specially designed leg brace and then the remaining month and a half in rehab with physio Simon Pope.

Tony should be available for Hull's final Super League game of the season, the derby clash with Hull KR at Craven Park on Sunday, September 7th and of course the play off rounds.

Losing Tony is another blow for Hull in a campaign which has been dogged by injuries to key and influential players.

Tony was in top form when he limped off the field after 35 minutes in the 28-20 home victory over Huddersfield Giants.

He's arguably been Hull's most consistent player and not surprisingly coach Peter Sharp is extremely disappointed at losing him.

A little numbed by Hull's continuous injury problems, Sharp revealed: "I suppose we ought to be used to it by now, but we're not.

"This is a very sad loss for us because I felt Motu was in outstanding form and he was in my book the form full back in Super League.

"He's been tremendous for us and to lose him for what is virtually the rest of the season is a blow.

"But having said that I have to say we're fortunate in having Todd Byrne around the place because he has already proved an excellent replacement.

"Todd has done exceptionally well since stepping in at full back and his form is just another example of what a superb all round player he is, how valuable he is to us and why we brought him over from Australia."

Kiwis ready for battle at Jade
Thu October 26, 2006
by Sports Media NZ
The Kiwis are expecting the Great Britain Lions to roar on Saturday night at Jade Stadium in Christchurch.

After two losses to Australia in their opening games of the Gillette Tri-Nations series the Kiwis know what's needed. And they're not buying in to talk of the Lions being under-prepared.

English based utility Motu Tony has had his eye on the Great Britain side all year and he said there is plenty of talent within Brian Noble's squad.

"They've been saying they haven't had any serious games in the build-up to the test on Saturday but these guys have been training the whole year," he said.

"This squad of players has been together for quite a few years now. Out of all the Tri-Nations squads they've probably been the most stable. They've used pretty much the same core of players over the past couple of years."

Tony - who will start on the bench this week - said the squad didn't have much time to dwell on their narrow 20-15 loss in Melbourne last Saturday.

"The boys were gutted after the Melbourne game," he said. "Not many teams are ahead of Australia with 10 minutes to go. We had a bit of a sulk on Saturday night but then we had to start getting ready for Great Britain."

And Tony is excited about the chance to have another shot at the Lions after they soundly beat the Kiwis earlier in the year.

"They had a hit out against us in June and they beat us convincingly," he said. "We were missing a few troops that day. Things should be a bit different on Saturday night."
