Toopi to reach 150 games against former club
Tue July 5, 2011
Source: www.titans.com.au

Former Kiwi International Clinton Toopi will play his landmark 150th NRL match against his old club when the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans travel across the Tasman for Friday night's clash against the New Zealand Warriors at Mount Smart Stadium.

Toopi, 31, was today named by Jetstar Titans Coach John Cartwright in an extended 18-man squad which also includes the club's State of Origin representatives in Ashley Harrison and Greg Bird.

Dual International Mat Rogers was not included in the 18-man squad but Cartwright said the 35-year-old was still likely to travel to New Zealand to be involved with the team.

Reaching the 150 game milestone is a significant achievement for Toopi, who thought his professional rugby league career may have been over when he left the UK Super League in 2008 before being given a lifeline by the Jetstar Titans for the 2010 season.

Since then the Mt Wellington Warriors junior has revived his career to play 21 NRL games for the club and although he is unsure whether this year will be his last at the top, he is determined to make the most of every minute.

"So many players only get a limited opportunity and I'm just thankful. Playing back home playing against the Warriors, it's kind of fitting in a way,'' said Toopi as he and the rest of the Jetstar Titans squad joined 300 kids for a Kids 2 Kangaroos Coaching Clinic at Pizzey Park, Miami today.

"We've had a few boys that have had milestones this year and a lot of players look at it and think it's not a big deal. But when you finish, it is something that means something, playing in the toughest game in the world and accomplishing something like that is definitely special.

"I just wish I had the mindset that I do now when I first started out.''

Toopi, who played 22 Test for New Zealand from 2001-07, said it was nice feeling to be reaching the milestone in front of a huge contingent of family and friends ranging from his parents to childhood school mates.

"They've already started racking up tickets. I think it'll be a bit of a battle with (fellow New Zealand born) Bodene Thompson so we'll see what happens with the tickets.''

Cartwright said he was happy for Toopi to be reaching the milestone on his former home turf and hoped that he would step up a notch against his old club.

"I'm glad to be able to do that for him, especially over in NZ. He'll have a lot of family over there and it's the club where it all started for him,'' said Cartwright.

"You tend to get the guys that come out of the Warriors, they go back there and they go up a notch so we're hoping Toops does that this week.''

Toopi and Ridge re-sign with Titans
Thu September 9, 2010

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans have received a boost on the eve of the finals with experienced former New Zealand Test centre Clinton Toopi and emerging forward Ben Ridge today re-signing with the club.

Toopi, who will line-up in the centres against his former club in tomorrow night's blockbuster finals opener against the New Zealand Warriors at Skilled Park, has agreed to a new one-year playing contract for season 2011.

The club had offered Toopi the option of continuing to play next season or to take up an off-field role in player education and welfare, specifically working with Polynesian youth, but he has elected to continue his playing career with the club.

Ridge, a 20-year-old backrower who made his NRL debut for the Jetstar Titans in Round 20 this year, has extended his contract with the club until the end of the 2013 season.

Jetstar Titans Managing Director Michael Searle said the re-signing of the pair was a significant coup for the club, with both bringing different qualities to the balance of the team heading into the future.

"Since joining the club in the pre-season, Clinton has been a positive contributor to the team both on and off the field. His presence and experience has been an asset to the team on the paddock while he has also had a significant influence as a role model, particularly with the Polynesian members of the playing squad, off the field,'' said Searle.

"Ben is another success story of the Titans' junior pathways system having made the step up from last year's National Youth Competition (NYC) to be playing NRL this year. He is still only 20 years of age and I'm sure his best football is in front of him.''

Jetstar Titans coach John Cartwright said Toopi and Ridge had both overcome obstacles to be a part of the club's significant achievement in qualifying in the top-four for a second consecutive season in 2010.

"Clinton came to the club with some injuries but he has trained hard and with the help of our medical staff has been great for us this year. He has also been a great fellow to have around the club,'' said Cartwright.

"Ben suffered a bad leg injury in the Under-20s competition last season so the fact he has been able to recover from that and play first grade this year says a lot about the type of player he is.''

Toopi said he would be relocating his family over to Australia from New Zealand in the coming weeks after reviving his NRL career this season with the Jetstar Titans.

"Over the last couple of months things just sort of started falling into place, I got a few opportunities in first grade and my body started holding up. I thought there is light at the end of the tunnel and it ignited the flame again,'' said Toopi.

"It's been a long road, a lot of ups and downs. The Titans have looked after my body and maintained a training regime that suits my body now.

"I'm glad the club gave me time during the season to go home to New Zealand to catch up with the family. They come over in the next couple of weeks so hopefully we'll be able to start sorting out my wife a job in teaching.''

Ridge, who grew up in Roma, Queensland, said he was happy to secure his future on the Gold Coast.

"I'm really happy on the Gold Coast, the club has been good to me and the location is great,'' said Ridge.

"I was lucky enough to get a taste of first grade this year so hopefully I can build on that in the years to come.''
