The NSWRL and NRL have suffered another image-tarnishing blow with three players across the code in Australia returning positive drugs tests - including stand-in Penrith halfback Craig Trindall.
Trindall's offence is the least serious of the three; found with traces of cannibis in his system. Trindall has been issued a 12-week suspended ban and has been ordered to do 40 hours of community service. He has also been put on notice; any further positive test will see a minimum two-year ban handed out.
The other two offenders have been found guilty of a more serious offences.
Newtown Jets player Matthew Eather was found to have used the steroid nandrolone in July. He later admitted to using a human growth hormone in addition to the steroid. Eather has been suspended for 2 years, as per the standard for ASADA.
Penrith-St Marys player Greg Brain was also suspended for 2 years for steroid use, this time stanozolol. Brain was tested in July as well.
There was talk earlier in the season about an NRL playing being found guilty of a drugs offence, however the NRL declined to divulge any details at the time and the issue seemed to disappear. However, the earlier rumours have proven to be correct, forcing the NRL to go back on the offensive and re-iterate its strong stance on drugs in the sport; CEO David Gallop speaking strongly on the matter.
"Given the amount of testing we are undertaking through ASADA and given the in-house testing for illicit substances, it would seem a ridiculous risk to take," he said.
"WADA [World Anti-Doping Agency] draws some clear distinctions between performance-enhancing and non-performance-enhancing substances, but any positive drug result is enormously damaging to one's character.
"Any player guilty of taking a performance-enhancing substance faces a minimum ban of two years and life for a second offence."However, the distinction and the NRL's stance further demonstrates that this is an issue that is still polarising sporting bodies and sport in general, and will for some time.
