Turner to start for Learoyd-Lahrs
Tue July 21, 2009

The CFMEU Canberra Raiders will be without State of Origin star Tom Learoyd-Lahrs for at least one week, after he was ruled out today with a knee injury for Sunday's do or die match against the Wests Tigers at Canberra Stadium.

The good news for the Raiders is Learoyd-Lahrs injury is not as bad as first expected and he should only miss between one to three weeks of footy. Experienced second row forward Glen Turner has been named to start in replace of Learoyd-Lahrs, with Trevor Thurling recalled to the Raiders side on the bench.

Raiders Assistant Coach Ian Millward said the Raiders would welcome Turner back into the side and said the whole team needed to improve on the performance against the Panthers.

"Glen gets an opportunity to come back from some injury and get some momentum and game time and we're looking forward to having him back in the starting side," Millward said. "Some parts of our game have been good and some have been inconsistent and we need to improve on these areas."

Millward said the Raiders have gone with a lighter bench to combat the Tigers attacking game and said the players named would be able to combat the free flowing Tigers attack.

"I think the main thing you need to watch when you play the Tigers is that they have plenty of speed and ball movement around the ruck area and they have some players like Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah that can stretch you across the park," he said. "Having guys like Trevor Thurling and Nigel Plum on the bench gives us some good leg speed to defend this and they'll be very handy for us Sunday."

Raiders Skipper Alan Tongue has been named at lock for the weekends match despite missing a portion of last weekends match with a rib injury and he said he'll be fine to take on the Tigers Sunday.

"Its just an aggravation of an old injury so it should be fine once it settles down and I'll be ready for Sunday," Tongue said. "I'll be back in full training by the end of the week to test it out but I should be fine to play."

Turner re-signs with the Raiders

Tough Raiders second row forward Glen Turner will remain in green for the next two seasons, after agreeing to a new two year deal with the Green Machine.

Turner, 29, is currently out for the year with an ankle injury, but has been an instrumental part of the Raiders forward pack over the past two seasons, since joining the club from the Melbourne Storm at the end of 2006.

Turner said he's happy to have his future sorted by remaining in Canberra, and looked forward to a bright and prosperous future with the up and coming Raiders outfit.

"My wife and I are settled in Canberra and it's a great place to live so we're happy to stay for another two years," Turner said. "There are some great young players coming through here at the Raiders and I think we have a strong future."

The re-signing of Turner bolsters the Raiders forward stocks for the next two years, and also gives the young Raiders some more experience in the forwards to go along with senior front rowers Troy Thompson and Scott Logan.

Raiders CEO Don Furner said Turner has been a great buy for the club so far, and believes his experience and work rate will be a great asset for the Green Machine going forward.

"Glen has been great for the club since joining us from the Storm and we're very happy that he's agreed to stay with us for a further two seasons," Furner said. "We have some great player's coming through the juniors and to have a player of Glen's experience helping them into first grade can only be a positive for the club."

Furner said Turner's leadership qualities were also a big plus for the team, and looked forward to seeing him back in action in 2009.

"Glen is part of our senior leadership group and always has plenty to add when it comes to the decision making process of the players," Furner said. "He's had an unlucky run this year with injury but we can't wait to have him back on deck in 2009."
