Jetstar Titans coach John Cartwright today named former Souths Sydney utility back Luke Capewell at halfback and former St George Illawarra Dragon Joe Vickery on the wing in a youthful looking 17-man squad to tackle the Broncos in the first of the club's three pre-season trial matches.
The match will also provide former Canberra Raiders prop Brenton Lawrence with his first opportunity for the Jetstar Titans as he attempts to earn a permanent spot with the club after being invited to train with the team during the pre-season.
Capewell, who turns 22 in five days time, will form a new look halves combination with 19-year-old five-eighth Jordan Rankin while Vickery, 21, will man one wing with former Titans Under-20s winger Dominique Peyroux on the other flank.
Some of the club's senior players will be rested from the opening trial match but are expected to make appearances in the final two pre-season hit-outs against Souths at Coffs Harbour on Saturday, February 19 and against North Queensland in Cairns on Saturday, February 26.
After assembling his troops for the start of pre-season training way back in November, coach Cartwright said he was looking forward to seeing his side, including some fresh faces, put their training into practice.
"It's mostly some of the Under-20s from last year, some of the newer guys at the club and some of the guys who got a taste of first grade last year so there's a good blend there,'' said Cartwright.
"We've got five players involved in the All Stars game and another five or six coming off major injuries so pretty well the majority of those that are available are playing. There's probably just half a dozen who had long seasons last year so we'll just give them the benefit of an extra week off.
"For the guys that are playing there are some positions up for grabs, especially in the haves, the back row and the centres. There are opportunities there and there's a lot of youth in that side so I expect a really good game.''
Cartwright said the new-look halves pairing of Capewell and Rankin had a great opportunity to impress for the club's No.6 jersey ahead of the Titans' season opening NRL match against premiers St George Illawarra on Saturday, March 12 at Skilled Park.
"Jordan hasn't experienced first grade since that first year (2008) and Luke played there (five-eighth) a little bit at the Bunnies last year,'' he said.
"The five-eighth spot is far from cut and dried so that is really going to be dictated by trial form. If someone can really jump out of the box, they'll get a gig.''
Although Vickery faces some stiff opposition from the likes of Kevin Gordon and David Mead for one of the club's wing spots, Cartwright said the 2009 Toyota Cup Winger of the Year had not missed a beat during his first pre-season on the Gold Coast.
"Trial form will dictate a lot but he's been very impressive throughout the off-season,'' said Cartwright.
"He hasn't missed a session and he's a very enthusiastic young fellow who will be looking to impress for sure.''
