Wellens scores 200th try as Saints dethrone Wigan

Captain Paul Wellens scored the 200th try of his career in tonight's qualifying semi-final as St Helens dethroned defending Engage Super League champions Wigan Warriors to reach a sixth successive Grand Final.

Saints successfully followed up their 26-18 win over the Warriors in the opening round of the play-offs at the DW Stadium a fortnight ago with an identical scoreline to deny Wigan coach Michael Maguire a fairytale finish to his two-year stay in Super League.

Instead of the anticipated Warrington-Wigan Grand Final, it will be business as usual at Old Trafford next Saturday when St Helens take on Leeds for the fourth time in five years, hoping to secure their first title since 2006.

With the Rhinos ending Warrington's hopes 24 hours earlier, it means that for the first time since the play-offs were introduced in 1998, both the top-two finishing teams miss out on the Grand Final, and Saints' Australian coach Royce Simmons will lead his side out at Old Trafford in his first season at the helm.

Tonight's defeat sent veteran prop Andy Coley into retirement and also brought to an end to the Wigan careers of fellow forwards Ryan Hoffman and Eamon O'Carroll, although the latter at least signed off with his first try for more than three years.

St Helens front rower James Graham, on the other hand, will get the chance to bow out of Super League on a high as he prepares to join Australian club Canterbury Bulldogs.

The outcome was a tactical victory for Simmons, who decided against bringing back the experienced Leon Pryce in favour of sticking with young half-backs Jonny Lomax and Lee Gaskell and both responded with splendid performances.

Pat Richards gave Wigan the early lead with a penalty and it was 6-0 on eight minutes when right winger Josh Charnley gathered Thomas Leuluai's grubber kick after the bounce had deceived his opposite number Jamie Foster.

The Warriors were good value for their lead and would have been further ahead had Joel Tomkins managed to take a difficult pass from brother Sam with the line open.

The Saints youngsters appeared to be affected by nerves in the opening quarter, with Foster, Tommy Makinson and Gaskell fumbling the ball, but once they settled the home side clawed their way back into the game.

Gaskell fluffed a glorious tryscoring opportunity midway through the first half when he broke clear and failed to pass to the supporting Wellens but he quickly made amends by taking Lomax's pass to slice through a try.

Foster levelled the scores with the conversion and edged his side in front with a 27th-minute penalty but O'Carroll crashed over on the half-hour for his first try since 2008 and only his third try in six seasons.

Richards' second goal made it 12-8 at the break but, with more clinical finishing, Saints could have been in front as Andrew Dixon and Wellens both went desperately close before half-time.

And it was no surprise when the score changed hands five minutes into the second half with the captain's landmark score.

Wellens was perfectly placed to win the race to James Roby's delicate grubber kick to claim his 189th try for the club and his 200th in all matches.

Foster added the conversion, landed a second penalty on 50 minutes to open up a four-point lead and then doubled it eight minutes later after taking Jon Wilkin's cut-out pass to cross for his side's third try.

Foster lost his 100% record with the boot when his touchline conversion attempt went wide and, as Wigan launched a furious onslaught, second rower Harrison Hansen was denied by an ankle tap from Saints second rower Sia Soliola.

Roby then made sure of Saints' victory by forcing his way over for a close-range try, rendering Sam Tomkins' late score for the Warriors nothing more than consolation.

Wellens celebrates 400th appearance with crucial try

St Helens stalwart Paul Wellens marked his 400th appearance for the club with a second-half try as Huddersfield Giants slumped to an 18th consecutive defeat on Saints soil tonight.

The 31-year-old full-back, who received a guard of honour from his team-mates before kick-off, crossed for one of three home touchdowns to deny Giants third place behind Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves.

The score took Wellens to within three of a career double century as Saints showed commendable spirit to bounce back from last weekend's Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-final defeat by Wigan.

However, it was a bad night for the visitors, who lost Australian prop Luke O'Donnell with a knee ligament injury.

O'Donnell, in his comeback match from a hamstring problem and clearly in agony, received oxygen on the pitch before being carried off on a stretcher.

Saints then scored a vital third try through Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook after 54 minutes to help them into an 18-0 lead.

David Fa'alogo gave Giants hope of ending their St Helens hoodoo with 18 minutes left and Paul Clough's 68th-minute sin-binning left Saints' tiring defence with work to do to protect their advantage, but Lee Gaskell's drop goal wrapped up the points.

Giants, who also lost talisman Danny Brough before the end, fancied their chances of gaining a first away success at St Helens since a 16-15 victory at Knowsley Road on November 26, 1978.

The return of playmaker Kevin Brown, Fa'alogo and O'Donnell, gave them cause for optimism.

In contrast, St Helens kicked off without Tom Makinson, Tony Puletua, Chris Flannery, Jonny Lomax and Scott Moore from the side beaten by Wigan. Kyle Eastmond was still missing with a groin problem.

A heavy clash early on between Luke Robinson and James Graham ended with Giants' little hooker needing prolonged treatment, but both players eventually recovered with Canterbury Bulldogs-bound Graham prominent as Saints looked for a breakthrough.

But the hosts suffered a scare when Lee Gilmour, playing against his old club, just failed to gather Brown's palm back of Danny Brough's clever chip.

It was against the balance of play when Leon Pryce broke the deadlock after 25 minutes, producing a moment of brilliance as he created a gap with a dummy and then sprinted 30 metres to the line.

Jamie Foster, who brought up 500 points for the club in just 41 games, kicked the conversion to give Saints a 6-0 interval advantage.

Wellens' try two minutes after the resumption and Foster's second goal doubled Saints advantage.

And when McCarthy-Scarsbrook latched on to Jon Wilkin's pass to charge 40 metres for a superb solo score and O'Donnell was taken off Huddersfield knew the game was up.

Fa'alogo crossed to get them on the board, but even when Clough was sent to the sin bin for dissent Saints still held firm.
