Wesser to retire at seasons end
Fri August 12, 2011

South Sydney Rabbitohs fullback Rhys Wesser has announced that he will retire at the conclusion of the 2011 season.

Wesser, a veteran of 14 seasons in the National Rugby League, has played 218 NRL games to date including 177 matches for the Penrith Panthers between 1998 and 2008, and 41 games for the South Sydney Rabbitohs since moving to the Club in 2009.

Wesser has achieved some of the highest honours in the sport playing four State of Origin matches for Queensland in 2004 and 2006; won an NRL premiership with the Panthers in 2003; and represented the Indigenous Dreamtime team in 2008 at the Rugby League World Cup.

Wesser has been regarded as one of the most lethal attacking weapons in the game of Rugby League over the past 14 seasons scoring an incredible 129 tries to date. Rhys holds the record for most tries scored for Penrith with 113 as well as holding three of the top four season try scoring records at the Panthers with 25 tries in 2003 and 19 tries in both 2002 and 2006.

Wesser was also selected as fullback in the Panthers Team of Legends announced in 2006, named alongside players such as Brad Fittler, Greg Alexander, Royce Simmons, John Cartwright and Mark Geyer.

Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson paid tribute to Wesser.

"Rhys is one of the game's greatest role models off the field, and one of the game's most electrifying players on the field, and he has been this for many seasons," Mr Richardson said.

"He's achieved just about everything the game has to offer. He's represented his state and his people in representative matches, and won a premiership in the toughest team sport on the planet.

"He has managed to play quality football for 14 seasons and I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to work closely with him for so many years at South Sydney and Penrith."

Wesser says he is looking forward to starting the next chapter of his life.

"Season's end is the right time to hang up the boots and look towards the next phase of my life," Wesser said.

"I've enjoyed every minute of my career and I've been lucky enough to play for my state, to represent my people at the World Cup, and to have had the feeling of winning a premiership.

"I've been lucky enough to play with some wonderful players over the past 14 years and I've met a lot of great people, some of whom will be friends for life.

"I still have this season to finish off and I will give my all for the Rabbitohs on the field over these remaining games, and then I can focus on life after football."

Rabbitohs Head Coach John Lang, who in addition to coaching Wesser at South Sydney for two years had five years coaching him at Penrith, said Wesser's ability to score tries was his trademark.

"Rhys made his name as a brilliant try scoring player," Mr Lang said.

"He always had that ability to find the line, and now he has matured into a hardened professional as well.

"He's done a really professional job for us at Souths and he's still scoring tries.

"It's been a pleasure to coach him for seven of his 14 seasons at NRL level and I wish him the best of luck in the future."

Wesser's manager, Darryl Mather, said: "Rhys Wesser has been an outstanding professional for over a decade, having achieved some of the major goals in the game, including Origin selection and premiership victory.

"More importantly, Rhys has shown himself to be an outstanding role model to Indigenous and Torres Strait Island youth through his exemplary service to the game of Rugby League."

Established in 1908, the South Sydney Club has won 20 first grade premierships and provided 63 internationals for the Australian side, and have famously worn their cardinal red and myrtle green colours since inception. The rebirth of the Rabbitohs began on 7 June, 2006 through a new partnership between Russell Crowe, Peter Holmes a Court and the then 8000 Members of the Club. The Rabbitohs made the semi-finals for the first time in 18 years in 2007, and strengthened their Ticketed Membership to over 12,000 with over 20,000 Total Members in 2011.
