The 25-year-old, who has been one of Hull's best performers this season despite being forced to occupy a number of different positions because of the club's lack of numbers, scored two tries while Craig Hall landed both conversions to condemn Wakefield to a fourth loss in a row.
Whiting's poor judgment had earlier allowed Daryl Millard to open the scoring for Wakefield, but after that he rarely put a foot wrong as Richard Agar's men revived their season following two heavy defeats to Leeds Rhinos.
The result meant an unhappy return to the KC Stadium for three of Wakefield's travelling party.
Coach John Kear had previously enjoyed a good record against the club that acrimoniously sacked him in 2006, while prop Paul King and stand-off Paul Cooke were afforded differing receptions from the home crowd after their respective decades of service.
Hull started the game without eight first-team regulars and were forced to select prop Mark O'Meley who had four broken ribs, and they struggled early on as Wakefield impressed.
Cooke would have scored had he not fumbled an Aaron Murphy offload from a Ben Jeffries kick, while Jeffries was about to cross in the corner until Craig Hall's crunching tackle forced him to lose possession.
It was only a matter of time until the Wildcats scored, though, and they grabbed their first try with 12 minutes gone as centre Millard beat Whiting to another Jeffries kick for his first try in six appearances.
Whiting was soon able to make amends at the other end, stylishly jinking his way to the line after being played in by Jordan Tansey. Hall added the extras.
Wakefield's Sam Obst skipped in under the posts but Cooke was deemed to have kicked the ball out of Tansey's hands in the build-up.
And Hull took full advantage of their reprieve as Whiting swooped on Luke George's fumbling of Richard Horne's kick two minutes before the half-time hooter and Hall converted.
Whiting could have completed a hat-trick shortly after the restart, but was unable to cling on to the ball as he leapt to intercept Cooke's looping pass to George.
Poor handling was Wakefield's worst enemy as the half wore on, never more apparent than when Murphy dropped the ball close to the line with 17 minutes to go after another Jeffries kick had caused chaos in the Hull defence.
Damien Blanch went over in the corner for Wakefield with a minute left, but it was far too late to make a difference.

Source: www.hullfc.comVersatile Hull FC star Richard Whiting has signed a new one-year deal with the Black and Whites.
The centre, stand-off, back row or full-back was out of contract at the end of the current season but will now stay with Hull for at least a further 12 months.
After agreeing the deal, Whiting said, "I am determined once again to prove my worth to the team and use this season to earn another deal with Hull."
"I have had a tough couple of years, but with a full pre-season under my belt I am confident I can cement a regular spot in the 17."
It has been an up and down couple of years for Whiting. He made his 101st appearance for the club last season before suffering two horrendous injuries, breaking his arm and then his leg in two places.
However, the former Featherstone man returned just as strong this season and his versatility has been a vital asset for Richard Agar's men playing in the centres and at full-back as the current injury crisis continued to bite.
Hull coach Agar said, "Richard has shown in the last few weeks he is very much up for the challenge, there will be plenty more ahead at Hull FC and I know he will attack them with all he has got.
"It has been a difficult couple of years for him, but with a good pre-season under his belt he will come back a much stronger, more physical and better Richard Whiting."
He added, "He is a model professional who works hard on and off the pitch and he is a player we can always rely on."
Since his debut in 2004 he has made 117 appearances in the irregular hoops bagging 37 tries and is now just 2 league appearances from 100 in the Black and White.
He has also represented England since joining Hull as well as picking up the accolades of Super League Young Player of the Year (2005) and Super League Community Player of the Year (2007).
Whiting was also part of the 2005 Challenge Cup winning team as well as the side that lost out in the Super League Grand Final of 2006.
Hull FC Chief Executive James Rule added, "Richard has shown determination and dedication to battle back from two nasty injuries to play a key role for us this season and I know he is already focussed on making an even bigger contribution in 2010."
