Williams and Holdsworth inspire Salford to shock victory

Winger Danny Williams scored a hat-trick to keep his Salford City Reds side's flickering play-off hopes alive, and dent Huddersfield Giants' top-four ambitions in the process.

Man of the match Williams has now scored five tries in only four games for the Reds, who responded to new coach Matt Parish's recent criticism with an impressive show.

Salford went into the clash after three successive defeats by Hull KR, Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors and keen to avenge their 52-22 hammering at Huddersfield in April.

They emerged victorious, Parish`s first success in charge, but will still need to win their last two games and hope for results of other fixtures to go their way if they are to make the eight.

Huddersfield, the early season pacesetters, will fall out of the top four if Catalan Dragons beat Warrington Wolves tomorrow.

The Giants were missing Danny Brough alongside Luke O'Donnell as they sought to end their miserable run of only one win in the last five league and cup matches.

But Luke Robinson passed a late fitness test and made a surprise appearance against one of his former clubs.

Salford made a flying start after Huddersfield failed to gather the ball from the kick-off and skipper Daniel Holdsworth crashed over after two minutes.

Holdsworth booted the conversion and Parish's harsh words after the Wigan defeat seemed to spur Salford who were playing with plenty of enthusiasm.

But the Reds had a let-off with ex-Salford winger David Hodgson having a try disallowed by referee James Child for a forward pass from Kevin Brown.

Huddersfield had better fortune after 21 minutes with Jermaine McGillvary beating Jodie Broughton to score his 14th try of the season from a well-judged kick by Scott Grix, who landed the touchline conversion.

The Reds regained the lead almost immediately with Williams taking Holdsworth's pass to cut inside Hodgson to make it 12-6.

The Giants levelled thanks to a scorching Brown break which was supported by Lee Gilmour, with Grix adding the conversion.

Huddersfield went in front for the first time six minutes before the break with David Fa'alogo charging onto Robinson's pass to scatter several defenders, with Grix's conversion from under the posts making it 18-12.

McGillvary was helped off early in the second half before Huddersfield missed a chance to go further ahead when Grix narrowly failed to score from Brown's kick.

It proved costly with Adam Neal's burst creating the chance for Williams to take Sean Gleeson's pass for his second try and reduce the arrears to two points.

Hodgson had another try ruled out for another forward pass from Brown after Huddersfield had been forced to soak up intense Salford pressure.

But the Reds regained the lead 13 minutes from time with Williams taking Luke Patten's pass to complete his treble.

Holdsworth sealed a deserved victory with a last-gasp penalty to give Parish his first win in charge after three defeats.

Huddersfield are now without an away win since beating Hull FC on May 27.

Hull KR take winger Williams on trial

Hull Kingston Rovers have taken former Leeds Rhinos winger Danny Williams on a month's trial.

Williams, 24, scored thirteen tries in fifteen appearances for the Rhinos between 2006 and 2008, with loan spells at Castleford Tigers and Hull FC in the same period.

In nine games for the Tigers, Williams scored ten tries but he has spent the last three years with Aviva Premiership rugby union outfit Newcastle Falcons where he has scored twelve tries in 46 appearances.

He also made two appearances for England during his first stint in the 13-a-side code.

"It's been really good," said Williams after the first day of his trial at Craven Park on Tuesday.

"The boys got a good win at the weekend so there's a really positive environment around and everyone's really happy and cheerful so they've made me very welcome.

"I'm thankful for the chance to come here. It's a great club and I'm thankful to get the chance to come and play with the boys and see where I can go from there."

"We've given him the opportunity to train, have a look at our facilities and we'll go from there," said Rovers Head Coach Justin Morgan.

"He might get a run-out in the Nines next Tuesday to see how he goes but we'll just be putting him through a series of tests to see where he's at compared to our players and see if he fits into our environment.

"If he does then we'll take the next step with him and his agent."
