Maiden Sweats On Skipper

NORTHERN Pride coach David Maiden is bracing himself for some unwanted news after inspirational skipper Ty Williams failed to complete Saturday night's round nine Intrust Super Cup match against Souths Logan.

Williams, a former Cowboys and Queensland Maroons Origin star, will have scans on a bicep injury that forced him from the field with about 15 minutes remaining.

"It doesn't look good for him unfortunately," Maiden said.

Before heading to the dressing rooms, Williams scored one of the Pride's six tries in their 36-6 victory at Barlow Park.

Incredibly, the Magpies led 6-0 at half-time before conceding six converted tries in the second half to the rampant home outfit.

Maiden conceded his team struggled in the opening 40 minutes.
"We didn't complete sets and Souths were in our face and put plenty of pressure on us," he said.

However, the Magpies were down on troops in the second half and simply ran out of legs.

The Magpies' own injury woes came on top of the loss of fullback David Milne, who was struck down by a stomach bug on the way to Cairns and didn't take the field.

Maiden was delighted with his team's performance in the wake of their first loss of the season the previous weekend.

"It was pleasing to see us respond that way," he said.

Jake Leary was the Pride's players' player, while Chey Bird also impressed with his cool head at the back and last ditch defence.

NORTHERN PRIDE 36 (Chey Bird, Rod Jensen, Brett Anderson, Ty Williams, Ryan Ghietti, Mark Cantoni tries; Chey Bird 6 goals) def SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES 6 (Ben Cronin try; Mick Picker goal) at Barlow Park.

Stig ruled out of Intrust Super Cup Grand Final

CLASSY five-eighth Ryan Stig's desperate attempt to play in Sunday's Intrust Super Cup grand final has ended in heartbreak, with the Northern Pride star today officially ruled out of Sunday's clash against Norths at Suncorp Stadium.

"He's devastated - but that's the way it goes," Pride coach David Maiden said from Cairns this afternoon.

Earlier today, Maiden considered Stig a "reasonable" chance of taking the field for the grand final blockbuster after learning of the young playmaker's rapid recovery from shoulder ligament damage sustained in the Pride's 28-8 win over Souths Logan last Sunday.

Stig was able to handle most of the contact work during his fitness test, but much to his frustration, he struggled with the simple task of passing the ball.

Maiden conceded Stig's unavailability was a massive blow.

"He's been very good for us the last couple of months. But everyone is positive - Clint Amos is coming in (to play five-eighth) and the boys know he will do a very good job."

It is the second injury blow for the Pride this week after Cowboys veteran Ty Williams was forced to withdraw with a knee problem.

PNG international Rod Griffin, originally named in a 19-man Pride squad, will now start off the interchange bench in a revamped Pride team.

Norths Devils coach Kevin Carmichael said the Pride remained a formidable opponent, despite the setbacks.

Carmichael, a member of the last Devils team to win a Queensland Cup premiership in 1998, confirmed skipper Mark Leafa would play.

The big Norths prop limped from the field with an ankle problem shortly after the half-time break in the Devils' 56-12 thumping of the Mackay Cutters.

"He's pulled up OK. He didn't do much Wednesday night," Carmichael revealed.

"But he joined in with the team at the back end of the session and did some running. I don't see us having any problems with him.

"He'll get through his usual amount of game time and his go-forward is very important for us."

The Devils will complete their preparations with a 2pm hit out at Bishop Park tomorrow.

The players and coaching staff will enter camp in the city following the session.

"I suppose the importance of the game then will start hitting home," Carmichael said.

"It's a great promotion to be playing at Suncorp Stadium and a reward for the players. Hopefully we can get a really big crowd there."

Carmichael nominates experienced Pride halfback Chris Sheppard as his team's biggest threat on Sunday.

He said the battle between Carmichael and veteran Devils playmaker Shane Perry would be an absolute beauty.

"It's going to be a very tough game, it's going to be a tight tussle right through to the end," Carmichael said.

"I'm pretty confident of winning if our blokes play like they have the last three or four weeks and have that good attitude in defence."
