Bulldogs re-sign Winitana and Kite

The Mitsubishi Electric Bulldogs have secured the future of two more emerging stars, extending the contracts of local juniors Tim Winitana and John Kite for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. The extraordinary injury toll facing the Bulldogs has also led to the signing of Joe Williams who will play VB Cup and provide back-up in the halves.

After an impressive pre-season 21 year old Winitana forced his way into the starting side where he has had a strong impact in the centres, including a Players Player performance in the Round 2 match against the Rabbitohs.

20 year-old Kite has worked his way through the Bulldogs development pathways, playing in junior representative teams and working as a Trainee last year. The big front rower is expected to move into the top 25 squad next season.

Having played nearly 50 first grade games Williams provides a solid alternative in the halves in the event of further injuries.

"These are all important signings for us, we're particularly pleased to be able to secure the services of local juniors in Tim Winitana and John Kite," said CEO Todd Greenberg.

"They are both very capable players with a great deal to offer the club and we expect them to play a key role in a bright future for the Bulldogs.

"Joe Williams knows the demands of first grade football and is an important acquisition for us given the uncanny number of injuries we've endured already this season."

Bulldogs drop Tonga and Roberts for discipline reasons

Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes has named the following team to meet the Broncos this Friday at Telstra Stadium.

1. Luke Patten
2. Hazem El Masri
3. Daryl Millard
4. Tim Winitana
5. Cameron Phelps
6. Daniel Holdsworth
7. Brent Sherwin
8. Mark O'Meley
9. Corey Hughes
10. Willie Mason
11. Sonny Bill Williams
12. Andrew Ryan (c)
13. Reni Maitua

Interchange:
14. Adam Perry
15. Nick Kouparitsas
16. Kane Cleal
17. Jarrad Hickey

Willie Tonga and Ben Roberts have been demoted to Premier League due to disciplinary reasons. Their places have been taken by NRL debutant Tim Winitana (centre) and Daniel Holdsworth (five eighth).

Steve Folkes commented, "Ben and Willie broke the team curfew after the win over the Warriors in Auckland. The team is just as dirty as I am about their behaviour.

"They've broken the rules and now face the consequences."

Winitana, 20, will be the 687th first grader for the Bulldogs. He has played 13 Premier League games for the club and 43 Jersey Flegg games. In 2007 he has scored two tries in his three appearances in Premier League.

Willie Mason returns from a hamstring injury to replace Chris Armit who will be on the sidelines for up to eight weeks after having shoulder surgery.

Nick Kouparitsas comes into the 17 in place of Lee Te Maari who suffered a knee injury in round 12*.

Cameron Phelps and Jarrad Hickey have been cleared to play after both suffered concussion in round 12*.

In an effort to increase awareness of breast cancer and to raise funds for National Breast Cancer Foundation research projects, the Bulldogs team will be playing in pink and white Nike socks instead of the usual blue and white. The socks will then be signed by the relevant player and auctioned off with proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

The wearing of the pink socks by the players coincides with the third annual "Harvey Norman Bulldogs Women In A League of Their Own" dinner which will be held on the same night at Telstra Stadium. The dinner, which is open to the public and corporate sector, celebrates the contribution women make to rugby league, from grass roots level to the elite level of the NRL. The National Breast Cancer Foundation is also the Bulldogs' charity partner for this function.

Tickets for the "Harvey Norman Bulldogs Women In A League of Their Own" dinner are $180 and can be purchased through the Bulldogs office at Belmore Sports Ground, via phone on 02 9789 2922 or download a booking form at www.bulldogs.com.au/uploads/2007_Women_flyer.pdf

The Bulldogs pink socks will be auctioned off online at www.graysonline.com.au.

* The Bulldogs had a bye in Round 13.
