Woolnough joins Penrith on three-year deal
Wed May 30, 2007
by Matthew O'Neill
Newcastle prop Adam Woolnough has continued the recent exodus of players from Newcastle and will link with Penrith in 2008 on a three-year deal.

Woolnough failed to receive an offer from the Knights and yesterday finalised a deal with the Panthers. Unlike Clint Newton who signed with Melbourne for the remainder of this season, Woolnough will play out the 2007 season with Newcastle before heading across to Penrith.

The 25-year-old made his NRL debut for Newcastle in 2002 and has played 106 first grade games for the club. He was named as part of the Knights leadership group at the start of the season along with Jarrod Mullen, Steve Simpson, current captain Danny Buderus and now retired captain Andrew Johns.

Woolnough's Newcastle team-mate Josh Perry is expected to pen a deal with Manly in the coming weeks and other Knights players including George Carmont, Reegan Tanner and Riley Brown haven't been offered contracts. Knights coach Brian Smith is going down the same path of Tim Sheens in 2003/04 where he'll shed plenty of the dead wood in the club and replace them with exciting youngsters that will be able to adapt to the speed of the modern game.

Milestones for Johns and Woolnough

Knights Captain, Andrew Johns will achieve yet another Rugby League milestone this weekend when he makes his 250th First Grade appearance in the blue and red.

The most capped player in the club's 20 year history, Johns will lead the Knights into battle against The Melbourne Storm at EnergyAustralia Stadium for the Easter Saturday showdown.

Knights enforcer, Adam Woolnough also reaches a personal milestone, playing his 100th game for Newcastle in his 7th year of First Grade football.

A Taree junior, Woolnough debuted for the Knights in May 2002 as a teenager against the New Zealand Warriors at EnergyAustralia Stadium. He found career best form in 2006, earning selection in the Prime Ministers XIII and is a member of the Knights Leadership Group.

Meanwhile, Danny Buderus will be making his long awaited comeback, attracting a healthy pre-sale crowd.

The Knights head into Saturday's hit out with the New South Wales Captain on board for the first time this year - out to reclaim his Test jersey against incumbent Australian Hooker, Cameron Smith.

Three days from kick off, 14,500 tickets have been sold but supporters holding off until Good Friday to secure seats are advised The Knights Kingdom Supporter Store will be closed for the public holiday.

On Good Friday tickets can still be purchased from Ticketmaster on 136 100 or online at ticketmaster.com.au.
