Castleford continue impressive Super League start
Sun February 20, 2011

Castleford Tigers mastered the filthy conditions to make it two wins out of two in an impressive start to Engage Super League XVI with an 18-12 victory over Huddersfield Giants.

Australian winger Nick Youngquest scored a try in each half on his home debut, the second a contentious score, as the Tigers successfully followed up their big opening-day win over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

Castleford, who gave a debut to 17-year-old hooker Daryl Clark, produced a near-perfect opening 40 minutes to take control and then withstood a brief fightback from an out-of-sorts Huddersfield to clinch a deserved victory.

Both sides went into the game on the back of impressive opening wins indoors at the Millennium Stadium but the Giants struggled to adapt to the conditions on a cold, wet night at the PROBIZ Coliseum and they surrendered possession all too easily.

After an opening in which both sides tested each other out, the only try of the first half came after 14 minutes when Castleford's playmaker-in-chief Rangi Chase put in a well-placed kick to the corner for Youngquest to collect and cross unopposed for his first try.

Kirk Dixon added the touchline conversion and increased his side's lead with a second goal after 25 minutes when referee Steve Ganson awarded the first penalty of the match.

The penalties increased, along with the handling errors, as the game developed into a scrappy affair.

Dixon missed a chance to edge the Tigers further ahead when he was wide with a 40-metre penalty but the home side were good value for their 8-0 interval lead.

But coach Nathan Brown's pep talk clearly did the trick for the visitors were a much more lively outfit in the second half.

Right winger Jermaine McGillvary pulled a try back within two minutes of the re-start, taking Scott Grix's long pass to finish decisively at the corner, and Danny Brough added the conversion.

Huddersfield stand-off Kevin Brown ought to have added another try but he dropped Lee Gilmour's pass with the line beckoning and the let-off proved costly.

The decisive moment came after 56 minutes when Giants full-back Grix was tackled over his own line as he attempted to clear the danger and the ball came loose.

Youngquest touched the ball down and video referee Richard Silverwood gave him the benefit of the doubt in awarding the try despite suggestions of an illegal ball steal.

Huddersfield had barely recovered from the blow when the Tigers struck again, Dixon reaching Danny Orr's high kick to the line ahead of his opposite number David Hodgson and palming the ball back for Joe Arundel to score.

Dixon was off target with both conversion attempts but found the mark with a penalty seven minutes from the end after Huddersfield hooker Shaun Lunt had been sin-binned for a late tackle on Chase as the visitors finished with 12 men.

But at least the Giants had the last say when McGillvary scooped up the ball from Brown's speculative kick in stoppage time to score his second try and Brough added his second goal.

Youngquest warns against complacency ahead of York tie

Nick Youngquest has urged his teammates not to get complacent against Carnegie Challenge Cup Fourth Round opponents York City Knights following Crusaders hard-fought victory over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

Brian Noble's side celebrated their second away victory of the season in the Engage Super League with an impressive 20-10 success over the Wildcats at the Hearwell Stadium. It was their fourth win of the campaign and which is already an improvement on last season which saw the Welsh side secure only three wins all year.

And winger Youngquest, 26, who scored his third try of the season against Wakefield, said the squad were relieved to sample the winning feeling again following narrow loses to Castleford and Bradford.

"It was good to get back to winning ways and to get the two points," said Youngquest.

"We've been working really hard on a number of things in training and it paid off against Wakefield. We put in a real good shift today, especially in defence. We've probably let the last two games slip at Castleford and Bradford so it was good to get the result at Wakefield.

"We were guilty of not finishing off our chances at Bradford last week. This week we were more clinical and took our opportunities a bit better but, having said that, we probably could have finished off a couple more to be fair. We've just got to learn to control the ball, kick to the corners and make sure we close games out. Late on sometimes we do our best to lose games so a bit more composure in the last 10 minutes would have been nice. But we got way with it and got the two points which is good.

"Except for the last 10 minutes, that may be the closest we've come to putting in a 80 minute performance this season. We still gave away too many penalties and made a few silly errors so that is something we've got to work on but I am sure that will come."

Head Coach Brian Noble praised Youngquest's performance in the post-match press conference, describing it as his best performance for Crusaders yet. And the former St George and Gateshead star feels he is improving with each game, especially now he is in his favoured wing position.

Youngquest added: "I couldn't disagree could I?! You can't disagree with the Head Coach after all! It was nice to put in a decent performance this week. It was great to get a try and I feel like I am improving week by week and hopefully I can just keep going from here. Full-back and wing are two totally different positions. Wing is what I was used to back in Australia so that is where I feel more comfortable."

And he was also keen to praise his fellow teammates, especially the forwards whose hard yards laid the platform for Crusaders victory.

"They do that week in week out. Ryan O'Hara, Adam Peek, Mark Bryant and all the other guys get us going forward and I thought they were outstanding. It was a real arm-wrestle in the forwards with some pretty big shots going in from both sides so those guys deserve a lot of credit for getting the hard yards for us."

Youngquest also singled out Gareth Thomas for raise. The 100 cap international scored his first try since switching to the 13-man code in what was only his third start for Crusaders. A slick move along the line ended with former Welsh rugby union star crashing over for a superb try in the first half at the Hearwell Stadium.

Youngquest said:

"He was fantastic. To change sports at 35 and to do what he has been doing is awesome. He is a great player and he has really got stuck in and has been working really hard. Not only is he a great player but he is a great bloke as well who is learning week by week and as you saw against Wakefield he is getting better and better."

Crusaders attention now turns to the Carnegie Challenge Cup where they face a potentially tricky tie against Co-operative Championship One side York City Knights next Sunday at Huntington Stadium. The Knights currently lie sixth in their division but Youngquest insists Crusaders won't be taken their opponents lightly.

"It should be good and I am really looking forward to it. I played in the Challenge Cup last year for Gateshead against St Helens and we really tried to raise our game against opposition form a higher division. We wanted to go out there and prove we could mix it with the best in Super League and I expect York will want to do the same. Obviously I don't know too much about York but they are going to want to come out, knock us out and cause a bit of an upset. We have just got to go there and make sure we do our job, make sure we get the result and go through to the next round."
