Source: www.warringtonwolves.comWarrington Wolves are delighted to announce the exciting new signing of Michael Monaghan, 27 from Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles on a 4 year deal for the engage Super League XIII season.
Monaghan, one of the outstanding halfbacks in the NRL will team up with the Wolves other new signing Louis Anderson in 2008. Warrington beat off stiff competition from four NRL Clubs and two top Super League Clubs to get Monaghan's signature.
In the last week Monaghan has been tipped by former NSW Coach Phil Gould to be picked as his choice for the blues No.7 shirt in this year's State of Origin series after his outstanding form as the Sea Eagles halfback. He has been the driving force behind the Manly's march to the top of the NRL table. Monaghan has made 109 NRL career appearances to date scoring 21 tries, 2 goals and 7 Drop Goals.
He started his first grade career at his home town club of Canberra Raiders in 2001, making 47 appearances for the Club before signing for Manly in 2003. His younger brother Joel Monaghan plays for the Sydney Roosters. Monaghan's junior club was Tuggeranong Buffaloes.
Monaghan will be an asset to the Wolves award winning Foundation programme when he arrives at the end of the year. He is a former winner of the prestigious Ken Stephen Award for Services to Rugby League and to the Community.
Monaghan commented,
"When I made the decision to come overseas to carry on my footie; I spoke with Adrian Morley and Andrew Johns and I liked the sound of the setup at Warrington. It is a Club with a positive future and I wanted to be part of that.
"I am looking forward to getting involved in the Wolves Community programme; it is something I am keen to do; work with disabled and disadvantaged children."Head Coach Paul Cullen commented on his latest acquisition,
"Micheal's ability, ambition, mental toughness and maturity are obvious assets which will be of great service to our club."Stats:

Competition co-leaders Manly have dropped a bombshell on the eve of Saturday's crunch clash against North Queensland by allowing Michael Monaghan a release from the final year of his contract in 2008 to achieve his halfback ambitions.
Monaghan's form at halfback in the absence of Matt Orford has been extremely impressive and clubs have already expressed interest in his services. The Sea Eagles have obliged by giving the halfback/hooker a three week 'window' to find a new club for the 2008 season and have the opportunity to play at halfback in the top grade.
The former Manly captain told Rugby League Week today,
"I would love to stay at Manly but the reality is they have a good halfback and good hooker in Mat Ballin, both on longer contracts than I am.
"I believe I'm a better half than hooker and that is where my future lies.
"There are a few clubs looking for a half for next season. But if I can't come to terms with one of then I'll stay at Manly and be happy to do so."The clubs most likely to chase after Monaghan include the Dragons, Wests Tigers and Roosters with the Broncos and Knights also possible options. The Dragons, Wests Tigers and Broncos are struggling badly in the No.7 position this season while the Roosters could be an option if they believe talented youngster Mitchell Pearce is better suited at five-eighth or needs time in the lower grades to develop. Newcastle could be a bolter for Monaghan following the retirement of champion halfback Andrew Johns. Jarrod Mullen has filled in the big shoes of Johns, but before that he was viewed as a five-eighth.
Monaghan's form at hooker has been sound and his form when given the chance at halfback was close to the best in the competition as Manly's position on the table indicates.
