Source: www.superleague.co.ukAdam Sidlow scored a dramatic try in the dying minutes to give Salford City Reds victory over Crusaders RL in their Engage Super League clash at Wrexham tonight.
The home side led 18-16 going into the final two minutes, but Sidlow's try and Daniel Holdsworth's conversion meant they slipped to defeat.
Salford were looking to bounce back from defeat to Castleford Tigers last week, while the Crusaders also lost in their previous match, a narrow 12-7 reverse at home to Leeds Rhinos.
It was the Welshmen, looking for their third win this season over the Reds, who got off to the best start possible.
Stand-off Tony Martin went over for a try in just the third minute when he saw a gap from 30 yards out and dashed though it at pace, giving Michael Witt a simple conversion.
Salford recovered from the sucker-punch and put pressure on the home side before their persistence was rewarded.
It was as much a piece of opportunism for the Reds as Martin's effort. Salford got within five yards of the Crusaders line and were awarded yet another of the many penalties conceded by the home side in the opening minutes.
From there, hooker Wayne Godwin saw the chance to dive between the grasping defensive hands and just touch down over the line for Holdsworth to goal.
The Crusaders regained the lead soon after when an assault into the Salford danger area saw Witt cross-kick to the corner. The ball was knocked down by a combination of hands and replacement forward Ben Flower grabbed it to score.
Witt added the goal and, as the rain continued to pour down, the Welshmen had a good chance to force their authority on the opposition.
However, Salford battled back and, when they attacked down the right, Holdsworth was on hand to feed second-rower Luke Adamson for a corner try.
The scrum-half could not convert though and, in a tight game as this was turning out to be, that two-point gap could have proved crucial.
Right on half-time, the Crusaders should have gone further in front when another Witt cross-kick on sixth tackle saw centre Vince Mellars grab and then lose the ball in the process of going over the line.
Salford made the better start to the second period and took the lead for the first time when a high ball was fumbled by the home defence for centre Stefan Ratchford to dribble the ball football-style over the line from 15 yards before grounding, and Holdsworth added the extras.
The Reds tried to strangle the Crusaders, keeping them pegged in their own half, but the match opened up when, on one of their first attacks of the half, Jordan James went over and, with Witt converting, the Welshmen were back in the lead.
As the sides went for the victory it became frenetic, with both teams having chances to wrap it up.
But Sidlow's last-gasp effort sealed it for the Reds to avenge the two losses by the Crusaders this season.
