Uate wins back to back Petero Civoniceva Medals
Mon February 6, 2012
Newcastle Knights superstar Akuila Uate became the first player to win back to back Petero Civoniceva medals last Saturday at the NSW Leagues club. Along with receiving achievement awards for his NSW and Kangaroos selection Uate paid special mention to his mother who made the trip from Fiji.

"This is a special honour to receive this award again in Petero's honour. I would like to thank the AFRL for putting this night together and all the people on the panel who voted for me." said Uate.

" I just want to pay special thanks to my beautiful mother who made the trip tonight and if it wasn't for her this wouldn't be possible."

A rousing reception was also given for the James Pickering rising star award winner Kane Evans from the Sydney Roosters who also received an achievement award for Junior Kangaroos selection in 2011 and was an inaugural member of the AFRL's U/16's Development cup squad in 2008.

" I remember going on the Battle of the Bati tour as a 17 year old and watching all the boys play and then going on the tour as a player the following year as an 18 year old and it was special playing with all the boys that I idolized the year before. This has really helped my career and I am grateful to the AFRL for everything they have done for me since 2008." said Evans.

AFRL Chairman James Pickering was really proud of everyone's achievements over the year and spoke proudly of how this night has really helped lay the platform for the growth of Fijian Rugby League here in Australia.

"To see the development of our senior players right through to our young boys coming through the ranks is so rewarding for all involved. What is making this night and our association so special is the involvement of our NRL players in our program and the effect it is having on our younger players is just amazing. More recently we are really trying to involve some of the pioneers of our game and hearing Lee Nalagilagi speak tonight when he was inducted into our hall of fame really epitomizes where we started as a league playing nation to what it has become now with so many genuine superstars in our ranks now."

Award recipients on the night were:

AFRL U/16's Player of the Year: Joshua Suman
AFRL U/18's Player of the Year: Jokotama Dokonivalu (Bulldogs)
AFRL U/20's Player of the Year: Asipeli Fine (Roosters)
Cabramatta World Nines Player of the Year: Joe Ulubau (Tigers)
AFRL Senior Team Player of the Year (Noa Nadruku Trophy): Neitani Suka (Wentworthville)
AFRL Fiji Bati Player of the Year: Henry Raiwalui (Dragons)

Kane Evans (2011 Junior Kangaroo Selection)
Akuila Uate (2011 NSW Origin and Kangaroos Selection)

James Pickering Rising Star Award: Kane Evans (Roosters)
